Ms. Paige did a magnificent job of creating this story. Those that have watched Wizard Of Oz, know that there is a sequel to it called Return To Oz, starring Fairuza Balk. Reading Ms. Paige's No Place Like Oz, was like watching a movie of both those combined. There were details to the book that was like reading movie 1, and there were details to the book that was like reading movie 2. But, along the way, Ms. Paige added laughable moments, witty characters that you wouldn't see in the movies and an ending that is leaving me desperate for more. Right now. Not in April.
For fans of Wizard Of Oz movies, you'll love this book. It's captivating, twisty, turny and full of Emerald, and witch-y goodness! I mean seriously. I was reading this on my Kindle Fire, I was reading this on my iPhone, I was reading this everywhere. Dorothy is an amazing character and I loved watching this book come to life for me! There is so much that I want to say about this novella but I'm holding back because I know it will turn to spoilers. All I will conclude with is this: Get.This.Book.Now. Not tomorrow. Not next week. Now. It's over-the-rainbow incredible, it's beyond Munchkin Land 5 star worthy and highest on my favorites list!
Ms. Paige, you are a magnificent story teller and I can't wait for this series to continue, or for my book to arrive in April!! You are now on my favorites list!!! Well done!
This novella follows the famous Dorothy Gale. She is back in Kansas and life just isn't what it used to be now that she knows there's a whole world of magic out there, just over the rainbow, out of reach. She receives a mysterious gift on her 16th birthday and ends up on a whole new adventure. I won't spoil the story any more than that, but the places this story goes are amazing!
No matter your familiarity with Oz, you will enjoy the magic in this novella. For those diehard Oz fans, characters from the original books make appearances or are mentioned. And for those who have only seen the movie, you may be slightly confused by some names and subtle differences because this novella follows the book. There weren't ruby slippers in the original novel. The silver shoes were made more vibrant to showcase the beautiful technicolor of the movie. All differences are explained in the context of the book, though.
I am always a fan for retellings and stories that continue classic stories. This novella continues Dorothy's tale in an interesting direction. There are some darker themes in this than the source material. And it seems like the first full book in the series, Dorothy Must Die, will continue that darker theme.
I loved the way this novella was told and I look forward to reading the novel when it comes out in April. If you are a fan of retelligns or continuations of classic tales, I think you'll like this. I haven't read Dorothy Must Die, but if you are planning on reading it I suggest checking out this novella first. I give this novella a 5/5.
As I’m sure you can guess, my expectations for the book series are pretty high. I’ve read some reviews for Dorothy Must Die and the majority of people seem underwhelmed by it. The biggest complaint seems to be a very slow start. So I decided to start with the prequels. Seemed logical to me. No Place Like Oz is the first of two prequels, so far.
No Place Like Oz actually starts off a bit slow. There’s a reason for it (character/time explanations), but it’s still noticeably slow. It doesn’t really pick up until Dorothy gets back to Oz (this isn’t a spoiler, it’s in the description). Once she made it back to Oz (holy crap!) I didn’t want to put No Place Like Oz down. There’s a lot of action at the end and even before that the character interactions in Oz will leave you wanting more.
Dorothy is not likable. When she’s in Kansas, she’s a whiny, spoiled brat. When she gets back to Oz, she gets worse because anger and a sense of entitlement enter the mix. I’ve gathered (from the title of book 1) that she’s the villain, so she’s not supposed to be likable. I always thought Dorothy was a bit of a whiner though. You get transported to a magical land and all you can do is complain and whine about wanting to go home. Enjoy it! It would be understandable to be apprehensive about a new place and scared of the witches, but stop whining and enjoy the adventure! (That became more of a rant than I intended.) Overall, I loved the changes in some of the most famous characters out there. Whether we’re talking about Dorothy, Glinda, the scarecrow or anyone else, I loved the tweaks that could actually be realistic.
I would definitely recommend No Place Like Oz, especially if you haven’t already read Dorothy Must Die. If you’ve already read Dorothy Must Die, I would still read No Place Like Oz for some more background. Overall though, I would say when it comes to this particular series, START WITH THE PREQUELS! Read No Place Like Oz first and go from there, if possible.
