No Promises is a stand alone, new adult romance by N. Raines. I really enjoyed No Promises. I found it to be a fun read that was sweet, but at the same time each of the characters had enough of their own demons to give their story some grit as well. (but let's call it light grit, because overall I would call this a lighter, feel good read.)

No Promises is told in dual narrative between Sam and Rick. Sam feels like she is constantly in the shadow of her prettier cousin. She feels a little plain jane herself, but she has the kindest heart ever. (and she is super cute!) What I immediately loved about Sam is that she is surrounded by great people. Her dad was so awesome. I just loved him to pieces. And her cousin and Sam have a really wonderful bond. I enjoyed the two of them together too. It was no wonder that when Rick came into her life he was taken with her as well. She is just a good person. You can't help but like her. She actually reminded me of my best friend. (who is an amazing person!) Her big heart with animals and her work with feral cats and shelter animals was a wonderful addition to her personality. I really admired what she was doing.

Rick starts off the book carrying a big secret of his own. It was crazy, but you could actually physically feel this dark cloud looming over him. We don't find out what it is for a while but right from the start you can tell that it is pulling him down with the weight of it. I just wanted to hug him. I also loved that Sam has had a crush on Rick since high school, when he was dating Sam's cousin. It was so cute to watch her all grown up with the same crush. Their romance developed wonderfully. I thought N. Raines did a good job with letting things progress naturally between the two of them.

No Promises was a pretty straight-forward romance that was fun and sweet with enough emotions to add to depth but not overwhelm.

Sam has put her life on hold in order to take care of her father after he suffered a number of heart attacks. She has done so willingly, but she can't help but think that she's missing out on living her life to the fullest. Thankfully, her father is appreciative and she has her cousin to lean on. It is while at a party at her cousin's that she runs into Rick.

Events in recent months have left Rick in a dark place, so he decides to go back to a place where everything made sense. But to his surprise, nothing is quite as it once was. His girlfriend is not who he thought she was and he ends up befriending Sam. Rick is not in a good place and can't afford to get involved with anyone. But his attraction to Sam doesn't let up and soon enough emotions come into play.

I liked the concept behind this story and found it was well executed. Both Rick and Sam wee interesting characters to get to know, which made it a treat to see them connect on the page as the story moved along. I enjoyed their bickering and honest interactions and appreciated the effort the author made in making sure I was a witness to their connection growing as the story progressed.

Rick and Sam both had issues they needed to deal with and I found that their grow throughout the story matched accordingly. I enjoyed how Rick opened up to Sam. At first he was closed off and emotionally unavailable due to the circumstances of his return, which I came to understand easily. Sam helped to draw him out of his mind set offering her friendship, giving as good as she got and ultimately sharing her heart with him. Sam's main issue was more of her own doing.

No Promises was just the type of book I was looking for. It was quick, cute, with a sweet love story added in.

Sam had a crush on Rick since high school but knew he was off limits since he was dating her cousin. She felt she never measured up to her because while her cousin was beautiful, Sam had always been a plain Jane and had always been friend zoned by guys.

When Rick shows up to her cousin's party, what an ass he was. He was so rude to Sam and I just wanted to slap him. Sam had all the feelings coming back to the surface and when she had a chance to help him when he needed it, her feelings only intensified. I enjoyed seeing Rick open up and share his secret he was hiding. Once Rick noticed her, I was so happy for Sam because her dream came true. I loved to see when Rick opened his eyes and knew he could trust Sam and when she was in danger, his protective side stepped up.

Rick and Sam were meant for each other and even though she was trying to look after her father, I love how Rick stepped in to help them. I loved her father by the end because at times I felt he was being selfish by not stepping up and letting Sam live her life. Rick and Sam were perfect and it was an enjoyable read.

In short this is a story not to be missed. The characters were mature despite this book being label as New Adult - something I'm not a huge fan of, so am glad I didn't live to rue accepting an ARC of this story.

I loved the subplot with caring for the cats, an aspect of the plot that will appeal to animal lovers. Even though the characters are in their early 20's their life experience's have made them more mature than their years. I fell in love with them both! My heart broke for Rick when he retold the story of wee Dylan and what his tattoo stood for.

Sam's father was a grumpy a-hole for most of the story, and I didn't get why she stuck around, however by the end, their heartfelt conversation about bought me to tears!

Summary - There's plenty of steam, and plenty of sub-plots/angst to keep a reader glued to the pages and routing for Sam and Rick!! The cover is perfect for them!!

For me to love a story I have to become invested in the characters, as per above you can see I did! That fact alone made this stand out as a top-notch read for me.

More like this please Ms Raines.
