I'm an avid reader of SciFi, and especially enjoy 'series' novels that allow me to immerse into the world they describe (think Isaac Asimov's Foundation, or Larry Niven's Fleet of Worlds/Ringworld). To catch me, that world has to be unique, thoughtful and imaginative. To keep me, the author has to fully develop his characters, giving them interesting, credible personalities, take the storyline in compelling, thought-provoking, tantalizing directions, deliver the story in a consistent manner through each installment, and above all, remain true to the vision set out in the first installment.
Mr. Bard has certainly met, and exceeded, every one of those criteria with Brainrush and especially the latest installment No Refuge. I, too, was ensnared by the opening line of this book, as it called up the events from the previous installment, and heralded what was to come in this one. Character development, for both new and existing characters is very well done, and the pace of action throughout is intense. I noted another reviewer's reference to characters doing things not possible in the real world. I guess my feeling there is that any author creating a work of this magnitude wants to create a world apart from our own, and not every aspect of that world will, or should, mirror our own. Guess that's part of the fun of diving deeply into the world as painted in the Brainrush series. Once again, I was literally immersed in the Brainrush world, and it was over all too soon. While No Refuge can stand alone, you can't fully appreciate the characters and events if you haven't read the previous installments. Please do, you won't regret it!
Thanks, Mr. Bard! Another great read.
In book 6, No Refuge, the story about the main characters that we have come to love continues so it is definitely recommended that you read the previous 5 books as well. But believe me, even if you start out with this book, you are going to want to read the others, too. If this is your first adventure with Brainrush you are still going to grasp the story as there are some explanations about what had happened previously but you will want get the full picture.
The story about Jake, his family and his friends continues in the fast paced fashion that we have come accustomed to. As usual, there are lots of sci-fi, action, drama and adventure. The story line about the terminally ill kids and their travels was a bit unbelievable but this is a work of fiction anyhow. I had a hard time putting this book down and can't wait to read the next / last book in this series.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
