As she steps off the boat at Ellis Island in the opener to Ludwig’s new Edge of Freedom series, Irish lass Cara Hamilton beckons readers to join her as she searches for her brother, Eoghan, whom she had once believed to be dead. In keeping with the social climate in New York at the turn of the twentieth century, Cara confronts the hardships associated with being a young, unchaperoned Irish woman as she attempts to find her place. When a seemingly trustworthy countryman named Rourke befriends her, Cara is guarded but eventually reveals the truth about her immigration. An evolving series of twists and turns uncovers the truth about her brother, and about Rourke, forcing Cara to make hard decisions to save those she loves. Praised for her past works of historical fiction, Texas-based Christian-fiction-author Ludwig keeps readers on the edge of their seats in this suspenseful romance, interlaced with period detail, as desperation to find her family takes Cara down a hazardous road to loved ones lost and found. --Elizabeth Ponder

The dialogue, costumes and scenery of this historical romance were all quite true-to-life and historically accurate. While some of the events were a bit fuzzy, due to my ignorance of the politics of the time, the character development and action more than made up for it. It's not one of those sappy love stories that dwells too much on the characters' affection for one another. I love the twists and turns in the plot that kept me guessing to the end. Although the book is apparently part of a series, it does not leave you hanging too much at the end, so it can be read as a stand-alone novel.
This is a great e-book to read on the go. Just make sure you have enough extended time to read in several back-to-back settings, or you won't be able to tear yourself away.
The middle, the heart of the novel, was slower and seemed to almost drag to me. I felt like I knew what was going to happen from the beginning and I was just waiting for the shoe to drop the rest of the way through the story.
This book does pick up if you push through the slow parts! Forgiveness is a prominent theme. Overall a reasonable read with a probably plot outcome, I just don't understand why it felt so slow for so long!
My Copy came from Bethany House. I received this book for free. A favorable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.
This book left me feeling like the entire plot was a waste, or a side-story.
It's a very good pack book, and I'm sure I will read more books by this author.
In a new land not trusting anyone but yet drawn to the man she is attracted to, Cara finds herself in the midst of danger, uncertainty, and falling for a man she trusts.
Rourke is in hopes the bonny lass has no ties to the man he is hunting for. Yet, he finds himself learning truths that will set them both free.
Family can't always be trusted. I liked this book for the time era and the story of romantic suspense.
