Jack Kornfield is not only a wise man and a great teacher, he also writes like a poet. From the first page, this book carried me to state of calm acceptance; I felt soothed and supported by the universe. The title is perfection—there is no reason to postpone living in a state of presence, freedom and joy, and this book illuminates a clear and simple path. It is also filled with fabulous quotes, and stories that teach and inspire. What a gift!
This is a really incredible book. Through it, I am starting to understand how compassion and awareness work together and strengthen each other. For me, this has been a perfect antidote to a practice that is very goal oriented and striving. There are many other wonderful aspects to this book as well. Mr. Kornfield is truly a master teacher and author and I feel lucky to be able to read his books. I am rereading this book and also am reading his other books as well.
This book more than all the rest touches my heart the most. One of the most important differences, if not the most important in Buddhist Practice, is to achieve an experience of the transcendent, not simply follow what someone else says they did and how they got there/here; it's "from there, to here, not from here to there. I don't remember in any of Jack's writings where he shared one of the most "important" experiences a human being can have in spiritual practice. After all this time I feel it's perfect for him to do so even though the teachings forbid sharing personal experiences because it can lead to more ego rather than the transcending of ego; the danger is well documented throughout all practices of this nature. But now, after so much time has past, for him to share such an experience as he has done in this book, all I can say is thank you Dr. Kornfield for all you have done, especially now.
Jack Kornfield's latest book is an inspiration to those of us with some knowledge of the Theravadian Buddhist tradition but yet find the teaching's from the traditional teachers stiff and difficult to digest. He showed that despite being trained by the renowned forest tradition master Ajahn Chah, Jack retains the sense of what those of us who are not monastics seek to find on the spiritual path amidst the turmoils of modern life. He speaks with candidness of his failed marriage- he makes no attempt to gloss over it nor lay blame- and this is an endearing feature in many of his personal anecdotes from his teachings. No Time Like the Present reignites in me the spiritual yearnings ,though theravadian based ,yet from Jack's writings seem to be part of humanity's awakenings in the present.
Some of the things he teaches I have learned elsewhere. That has not stopped me from thoroughly enjoying the book. I would say more than enjoyed. It causes me to reflect peacefully on unpeaceful issues. The stories it contains nourish my heart and subsequently the rest of me. It is divided into eminently readable chapters, just about the right-size bites for me. Each chapter has a practice located at the end which I eagerly anticipate. Sometimes I even skip ahead to see what delights lurk there. All in all, I would say "No Time Like the Present" is a feast for the body, mind, and spirit.
Jack Kornfield pries open those rusted shut, unused parts of the mind and has them working like never before, and does it in one book! He has crafted the kind of read you don't want to end. I gave it four stars because some of the material wasn't new to me, but perhaps it bore repeating. Worth reading.
It was hard to rate this book as low as three stars, because it could be very worthwhile to someone who has not read Jack Kornfield or literature of this nature. There are many beautiful words and quotes which will help someone suffering going through hard times. Also, there are a number of useful Insight Meditation exercises which will help build awareness and loving-kindness.
My criticism lies in the fact that this work lacks originality to the point that it can't be ignored. It is full of quotes from other books that I have already read such as "A Fearless Heart" by Thingpa Jinpa and "The Book of Joy" with the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Kornfeld also repeats stories he has told in earlier books such as "The Wise Heart," without attribution. The ultimate impression is that Kornfeld has run of new ideas and must fill the book with something, so why not use nice sounding quotes and stories.
It is hard for me to call this a bad book, because I have gotten much benefit from Kornfeld's other works and I think someone who has not read the other books would find "No Time Like the Present" very helpful. However, if you are versed in modern Buddhist oriented literature, I would not recommend this book.
