The novel offers the story of the Landau family, who resided in a poor shtetl in Czarist Russia. After a pogrom, the family is forced to leave Russia. The family immigrates to the Ottoman occupied land of greater Syria, later termed Palestine, by the British. Dovid and Chavala raise their children while they fight the brutalities and injustices inflicted on Jews by the Turks. After the end of WW I and the British supplant the Turks, Chavala leaves British occupied Palestine, for the United States, where she makes her fortune.
The saga of the Landau family proves lengthy and at times, somewhat dramatic. Only a few of the characters are well formed and seemingly important events or relationships are often glazed over. However, the characters offer a realistic portrait of love and loss, and though the author changes the names of historical figures at times, the history presented in the novel is factual.

“More than a generational saga . . . Freeman relates this tale of struggle and courage in heartfelt, almost inspirational prose.” —The New York Times Book Review
About the Author
Cynthia Freeman (1915–1988) was the author of multiple bestselling novels, including Come Pour the Wine, No Time for Tears, and The Last Princess. Her novels sold more than twenty million copies worldwide. Born in New York City’s Lower East Side, she moved as a young child with her family to Northern California, where she grew up. She fell in love with and married her grandmother’s physician. After raising a family and becoming a successful interior decorator, a chronic illness forced her to adopt a more sedentary lifestyle. At the age of fifty-five, she began her literary career with the publication of A World Full of Strangers. Her love of San Francisco and her Jewish heritage drove her to write novels with the universal themes of survival, love, hate, self-discovery, joy, and pain, conveying the author’s steadfast belief in the ability of the human spirit to triumph over life’s sorrows.

This was a well-told story. I enjoyed it as did my mother, though enjoyed is probably not the right word. It was gripping, though I found the diversions into history (telling, rather than showing) to be a bit tedious. Those pages were few compared to the rest of the story. I also wondered if this story were written in 2020, would it be told just the same? It made me curious to know more about the history of the Middle East. My mother said that at the end of the book, the characters were in tears and so was she.

Learned so much about Israel's history. Chavala, the main character was a powerful, clever, and dynamic woman with the determination of the Biblical Deborah. This single character represented the will of the Jewish people who were determined to not only survive through seemingly insurmountable obstacles but to even create a modern nation and Jewish homeland. I enjoyed the progression of the story line from Odessa, Russia to post WWII Israel. Aside from some occasional grammatical errors, it was a well-written historical novel.

It most certainly filled my expectations. A very accurate compilation of historical events tied to a beautiful novel. My mother's family lived in Palestine from the late eighteen eighties to this date
My mother was born in that turmoil and because of it the whole family migrated to Uruguay
The book reminded me and gave a respectable back up to all the bedtime stories I heard on and off in my childhood.

An engaging saga of a family leaving Russia and the pogroms. You care about these folks and they rub shoulders with history. Great!
Note: These books have inaccuracies on Jewish practice which those of us practicing will see as glaring, most others might not care. Obviously too late to edit these novels. Does not detract from them, great reads.

Page-turning fictional story of the plight of the Jews fleeing Russia to Ezrat Yisrael and their determination to make a State. The discrimination and bigotry cast upon the Jews capture the human spirit from beginning to end. From the Russians, to the Palestinians, Germans, the Boudins, and the Brits it is unfathomable how they outwit and outsmart through this historical novel by Cynthia Freeman. Truly a must read!

I loved that book. Anything that has to do with Jewish people is of great interest to me. I have just finished another of hers: Portraits, I liked it very much, but found it a bit long, and not as good as: "No time for tears".

Interesting history of the early days before the State of Israel was established as well as a romantic novel.
