Great remote for media center

I really like this remote. I'm using it with JRiver media center on my HTPC and it is working very well!

Pros:
Labeled buttons. Some media center remotes just use inscrutable pictographs on a lot of the key shortcut buttons, and if you forget what they mean, it doesn't work too well. This one actually has text labels!

IR blaster: I can program the remote to control the volume and power on my Receiver, and the power on my TV. Super easy with JRiver media center and included IR blaster.

Good power/reception: No problems so far with the remote getting its signal to the receiver.

Cons:
Labels and buttons are small, so not friendly for the vision challenged.

USB cable on the receiver is too short for my setup. I'll get a USB extension cable to handle this.

I would prefer to have a few "extra" buttons for programmable features. As it is, I'm using the colored buttons on the bottom of the remote to do power on for my receiver and amp (labeling them with a label maker), but I suppose that means that in applications where those colored buttons may have a function (like a blu-ray movie perhaps?) I can't use them for the intended application.

Perfect MCE Remote For MediaPortal

If you're looking for a MCE remote controller that works with MediaPortal, this is the contoller for you. It's a "true" MCE-compatible controller; works right out of the box with Windows 7, with no special drivers or other software / configuration required. It works PERFECTLY with MediaPortal and Windows Media Center, so its a safe bet that it will work just as well with any other application that requires a "true" MCE remote control.

I made the mistake of purchasing the Windows 7 Vista XP Media Center MCE PC Remote Control and Infrared Receiver for Home, Premium and Ultimate Edition -- a simplistic IR remote that emulates keystrokes instead of transmitting the actual MCE commands to your home theater PC. It worked fine for sending fake keystrokes to Windows Media Center, but failed miserably as a "true" MCE remote control for controlling applications other than WMC.

The Noah Company MediaGate remote control was recommended to me on one of the MediaPortal support forums, and it turned out to be *exactly* what I needed. Great range, fast response when you push a button, complete compatibility at every level. The only thing missing from this remote is a backlight for the buttons... but that feature might be available on another model and I just couldn't find it here on Amazon.

I bought the Azend Media Kit to replace my Pinnacle kit that failed last year. It has worked so much better than the Pinnacle even when that was new. I could never get the Pinnacle to work with the Comcast DTA but the Azend works perfectly and I really like the remote. The Azend kits works great with Windows 7 and Windows 8.
Here is a tip for those experiencing problems with Windows Media Center setup when Playready will not complete an update. I had this happen with Windows 7 and Windows 8 on new HP laptops I bought in the last year. The condition is probably the same with any factory built PC/laptop that is delivered with a factory built OS image. This causes some kind of corruption with the Playready installation. I have never had this happen with PCs I built and installed Windows 7 or 8 clean. After trying numerous fixes from internet forums I finally found a simple one that works. Go to Control Panel - Programs and Features - Turn Windows Features On and Off. Uninstall Windows Media Center. Reboot and reinstall. Go back to Programs and Features and uninstall Playready. Start Windows Media Center - Tasks - Settings - TV - TV Signal. Playready should install and inform you that you can now view and record protected content.

7/8/13: I bought a 2nd Azend Media Kit to use with an older MSI notebook on my living room TV setup. It will be used much like a TIVO to record scheduled programming off my Comcast cable. I had it all setup and then had a HDMI audio issue. After that got resolved the Azend IR blaster seemed to quit working. I got an exchange for a new unit from Amazon. Same problem occurred and Windows Media Center would not find the eHome device. I am sure the one I sent back was OK because I found the actual sneaky problem. The MSI GX-330 has a "ENE CIR" IR receiver on the motherboard for remote control of the notebook. I have never used it. I noticed there were two eHome devices in the Device Manager. This was causing confusion in the WIndows Media Center software. I uninstalled the ENE driver, making sure to also remove the files.

7/25/13: Media Center worked great after I removed the MSI GX-330 ENE CIR driver. A week later I experienced performance issues where Media Center could not keep up with the realtime TV signal, stuttering and hanging. I ran a registry cleaner demo just for laughs. It cleaned 50 "registry errors" and my smooth TV performance resumed. I don't know what was sucking up all the performance. A week later it was back. I did a RESTORE back to when it was working and performance returned. A bunch of Windows Updates got removed.
We are enjoying the Media Center with our 42 inch Vizio TV. We also use it with TV network websites and a few video games.
