Eleanor is a compelling heroine who drops her noble ways in an instant and commits herself to blending in with the common people who end up becoming very dear friends to her. I loved the fact that Eleanor cherished the few belongings that she worked and paid for herself. Dougall MacFadyen is the man sent to find and protect Eleanor. Upon finding her, he comes to understand very quickly that changing her mind about her plans is a lost cause. The more he gets to know her, the more her passion becomes his own. Dougall and Eleanor fall in love through a series of lovely, sweet scenes during which they come to know and respect each other. One of my favorites, which I won't spoil, is when Dougall helps Eleanor in a way that is tender and sensuous without being sexual. I fell in love with these two while they were falling in love with each other.
All in all, a very engaging story. I enjoyed it very much.
The hero and heroine meet in a tumble and it’s all uphill from there. The heroine of the book, Eleanor is young, gutsy, and full of vinegar. In short, she’s a lot of fun to read about. Dougall is no slouch himself and you can't help but like him from the moment you meet him. It's nice to get to actually like them both.
Bale strikes an excellent balance between setting a rich, detailed backdrop and building a story intriguing enough to pull you in and not let go until you’re finished. If you like historicals, romances, or better, both together, you’ll enjoy this book.
