Editorial Reviews

Depending on what state of mind you find him in, Willis Earl Beal will tell you that Nobody knows. is his debut album or the natural follow up to Acousmatic Sorcery. While Acousmatic Sorcery was recorded on a karaoke machine, using found instruments, it worked as a raw, no-fi introduction to Beal's life as a songwriter and true outsider artist from Chicago, IL, but did little to display the power and natural beauty of the voice he used onstage. Nobody knows. aims to deliver on the promise of his live show.

Go see this guy live if you can, he can really put on a show. He doesn't try to hard, but its damn fun to watch. He opened for Cat Power a few years back and his music/performance were great but I'd forgotten about his tunes until recently while (reluctantly) watching Orange is The New Black and hearing his song on the credits. I didn't have a choice I had to sign on and buy his cd before my adhd kicked back in. He has great freakin' sound. His voice is off the charts bluesy mixed with raw Black Keys sound (before they were a radio band) greatness. Hope he makes it out there.

2nd album from eccentric Chicago artist has a fuller, more produced feel than the debut, but still
puts Beal’s unusually expressive voice in the foreground as an unconventional storyteller with an
insightfully twisted perspective. The music is a mix of acoustic folk, semi-smooth R&B/soul and
street-corner bluesy boot-stompers—with lyrics that read like intensely personal poetry of the
soul. Includes a guest appearance from Cat Powers. Sometimes recalls Tom Waits, Dave Van
Ronk, Daniel Johnston, R. Stevie Moore. An unusual & subtly powerful album.

Amazing, this is cool stuff. If you like the more experimental blues guys like Little Axe, Otis Taylor you should give this a try.

It has its moments, but does not live up to the hype surrounding its release. Instrumental backings (added after the vocals were recorded?) were not done artfully. Beal's voice is appealing but not unique.
