Product Description

Tailored to provide superior RAM and PCIe compatibility, the NH-D15S is an asymmetrical single fan version of Noctua’s renowned flagship model, the NH-D15. Thanks to its asymmetrical design, the NH-D15S clears the top PCIe slot on most µATX and ATX motherboards. At the same time, the single fan setup and recessed lower fins ensures 100% RAM compatibility with memory modules of up to 65mm height. Users who have sufficient room can also upgrade the cooler with either a 120mm or round 140mm fan on the front fin stack for further improved performance in dual fan mode. Topped off with the trusted, pro-grade SecuFirm2 multi-socket mounting system and Noctua’s proven NT-H1 thermal compound, the NH-D15S forms a complete premium quality solution that combines dual tower efficiency with excellent compatibility and flexible upgrade options.

High-compatibility version of NH-D15Compared to the award-winning NH-D15, the S-version uses an off-set, asymmetrical layout and a single instead of dual NF-A15 fans. This allows the NH-D15S to provide state-of-the-art heatsink performance while maintaining superior RAM and PCIe compatibility. |
Asymmetrical layout for better PCIe compatibilityAs many current motherboards have the top PCIe x16 slot sitting close to the socket, bigger heatsinks tend to block it. Due to its asymmetrical layout, the fin-stack of the NH-D15S is off-set towards the upper edge of the motherboard when installed in standard orientation. This allows it to clear the top PCIe x16 slot on most current µATX and ATX motherboards. |
Excellent RAM compatibilityThanks to its recessed lower fins, the NH-D15S provides 65mm clearance for tall memory heatsinks, making it compatible with most high end modules on the market. As the lower fins are recessed on both sides of the heatsink, compatibility is excellent not only on LGA1200, LGA115x and AMD, but also on LGA2011 where there are RAM slots on both sides of the socket. |
NT-H1 thermal compoundHaving received more than 100 awards and recommendations from hardware journalists around the world, Noctua's NT-H1 is a proven professional grade TIM solution that provides minimum thermal resistance, excellent ease of use and outstanding reliability. |

Well, recently, I've been wanting higher cooling capacity than the 240mm radiator I have can offer... but I have no room for a better radiator or another radiator in my case - and my system needs to be reasonably portable. So my only option was to buy a case which could handle my system along with another radiator or two. Looking around, about all I could find was spending about $300 on the entire upgrade... for what would be a more difficult system to lug around. Much more money than I wanted to spend on this...
So, I figured I'd look around at what the best air cooling systems available and, naturally, came across the NH-D15 (and the S variant). After measuring everything, and as Noctua has already demonstrated their AM4 kit - and said it will be free - I knew this would be a rather safe way to guarantee early adopter compatibility... I grabbed the NH-D15S.
I didn't expect the cooler to work as well as my water-cooling setup, but I figured it'd work well enough to cover my actual needs - and I could hold on to my water-cooling kit for any time in the future when I really want to go all out and spend a fortune on a sweet rig that isn't going to be moving about. As it turns out, I was wrong. This thing works every bit as good as my custom loop did with it setup for reasonable acoustic performance.
Sure, I could crank my pump to 100% and my fans to 100% and the D15S would have no chance of keeping up, but this system is a foot from my head and I just can't stand the noise the pump makes over 50%. Using PWM, my fans were usually all at idle, as well as the pump, and they'd all ramp up with temperatures. I didn't want them ramping up while playing games, so I set the target temperatures to 60C for the fans and at 45C for the pump. The result was that my idle temperatures were about 35C on the CPU and the max temps were about 78C (i7 2600k @ 4.8GHz + ~0.015V), but could momentarily hit 80C.
The D15S, however, with just one fan, outperformed my water-cooling setup using the same PWM settings! Idle is at 32C and the max is 77C (using IBT @ Very High). What really got me was just how much more quiet this thing is than my rather quiet water-cooling setup. I added another fan to the D15S (a Cougar 120mm PWM fan) which keeps the highs down to 76C - so not much change.
Clearly, *IF* I go back to water-cooling, I will only consider doing so with much greater radiator surface area. which will require a new, expensive, case on top of the radiator and tubing costs... so I am having a hard time justifying such a move. I may well stick with air cooling... and what better praise can you give a heatsink than that?
Also, the install was simple, everything is very high quality, yadda yadda...
With the 15S I have nothing to worry and a very silent cooling tower with the performance to show. I had it stress run with 1.315 volt at 5 ghz all cores and never went above 80c. I used the thermal paste that came with it I plan to use artic silver 5 soon after typing this review or kyonaut.
Fits a Z390 Tuf Micro atx gaming no issues with clearance. Added another noctua 120m to the front with ease still quiet.
Lastly I would recommend removing your motherboard to install this cooler. I think it would reduce the problem I had with installing the Cooler, but I'm just didn't want to mess with the motherboard if I didn't need too. I'm pretty good at making easy thing difficult.
I ended up getting the NH-U12S instead, which worked fine, but I wasn't able to overclock the CPU as much as I would like. A few months later, Noctua announced the NH-D15S, and it is exactly what I needed. The NH-D15 touched the backplate of my first GPU, but the NH-D15S has a good inch of space the edge of the fan and the backplate.
For reference, I am using this with an Intel 5820K. With the NH-U12S I was able to go up to 4.2 GHz at 1.2 volts while maintaining temperatures below 85 C at full load (Intel XTU stress testing). After upgrading to the NH-D15S, I'm currently stable with 4.5 GHz at 1.275 volts with temperatures staying below 80 C (I haven't tried going higher than this yet). It was well worth the upgrade and my dream PC just got a little better :)

I've owned the D15 before, and having the D15S now I see no reason to use a D15 instead. Installation uses the same SecureFirm2 hardware, however mine had an unexpected bonus in the box which was AM4 support, I assumed only the AM4 SKU coolers from Noctua had this compatibility but they seem to be silently adding it to other coolers as well.
I currently have this cooler installed on my 8700K (at 5ghz 1.35 volts, no delid) in a Meshify S2 with 6 fans (plenty of airflow). It gets up to around 84ish under load. Motherboard is an Asus Maximus X Hero Wifi AC and there were no mounting issues for those looking to confirm compatibility.

This thing has dropped my CPU core temps by 8-10C as compared to my Hyper 212 EVO, which means my chassis fans barely ever spin up to annoying levels any more under moderate to heavy loads.
