Well okay... First off I gave this collection of stories 3.5 stars based solely on the authors writing and the ability to give a full story in a fast paced book format. She was able to put in a pretty decent story line that seems ultimately focused around sex. Most of the book just wasn't my cup of tea. It's very erotic. Yes I knew that this focused on a woman who is changed because of some pretty crazy dreams. Crazy sexual dreams, I just did not realize how detailed it would be.
On that note let me explain why a star was taken off. Like I said this author loves the details. Sometimes I felt like it just went a little overboard. Though there were a few new ways to describe certain sensations. It took me a little longer to read this book because of the intense sex scenes(i dont normally read these), not all of them wanted by the character. The book opens with one such scene, though the main character does learn to control it.
The other half was taken off because, honestly I didn't feel the connection between the two leads. Maybe it was because of the fast pace of the books, but I didn't feel them click.
Overall even though it was not for me, I know plenty will enjoy this book.
I was given this book for an honest review from the author.
Nocturnal Voyeur takes place during the same time as her other story, Arrested by Passion. Coincidentally, you also get cross overs between the characters since the FMC from AbP and NV are friends and were roommates in college.
Right off the bat this story opened up with a scene I was not comfortable with. Shadowy tentacles appearing to Fiona in the middle of the night while she is sleeping, and ravaging the ever living hell out of her. In all manner of ways. Now this, what I’m going to refer to as “tentacle porn”, does absolutely nothing for me. Honestly, I can say that I didn’t really find this story to be exceptionally erotic. I really do have a hard time with things like vampires (dear lord, their dead. Doesn’t that make you into necrophilia?), or shifters (what happens if you’re doing the dirty and they effing shift!). So those stories never really come off erotic.
HOWEVER! I did figure out, while reading this book, that although I don’t find them erotic or sexy, I am seriously freaking hooked on her stories. But why? It’s because her books are anime!! I love anime, I love manga, and dammit if this isn’t TOTALLY a manga, without the actual comic. It even played out in my head like an anime! Once I realized this was my hook with J.D., I found I enjoyed the story even more, because I didn’t feel like there was something wrong with me for not finding it sexy. I just let that awesome story play out in my mind like I was watching an anime on TV. Honestly, I’ll probably go back and edit my review for Arrested by Passion now that I’ve realized this.
I really loved seeing Fiona’s and Katherine’s stories lining up during this, and I’m very glad I read AbP first as I knew what was going on when they met up. I’ll be supremely interested in knowing if the author is going to do more stories in this world as I would really like to see the 4 main characters from the two books all start working together. Of course, everyone needs to start being honest with each other first.
I would definitely recommend this book if you enjoy fantasy erotic, or like me, if you enjoy a really good anime/manga.
Much thanks to the author, J.D. Carabella, for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
