Barnes and Noble Heart to Heart Blog
"What could be more romantic than getting snowbound with a dark and mysterious stranger? .... Nicole’s entire survival rests in the hands of one inscrutable man. His name is Michael Tyler and he's an unbelievably sexy – and British – recluse, living alone in a mountain hideaway that's got as many secrets as it does rooms…. Nocturne is the kind of book that makes you want to turn off the phone and the television so you can do nothing but read. "
"Brilliant, couldn’t put it down.... A gorgeous read, a true romance with a delicious bittersweet ending that brought tears to my eyes .... Syrie James has a wonderful way with words .... I settled down in my soft cozy chair, with the fire on and just melted into the story .... A must read for any romance fan."
“A masterful piece of paranormal romance ... Syrie James is such a fantastic plot weaver... Michael has an amazing depth of character… Teens Will Love It ... Why Adults Will Love It: Who doesn't want to be trapped in the snow with a hot vampire writer with a soul? ... You will never see vampires the same again."
I’m Not Hannah
"A sweet, passionate, heart-wrenching, magical love story that was a pleasure to read.... I found myself wrapped up in the romance of this novel–-and enjoying every minute of it…. You feel such a sense of PLACE while you're reading this story.... The connection between the main characters is intense. From the very beginning, the conversation and physical contact is natural and warm, and it progresses to intense sexual tension and emotional connection in a way that makes you want to keep reading.... The chemistry between them is perfect and when they do give in to their physical desires, it's ... well, it's hot, y'all. I'm just saying. Ahem.... I finished it with a little sigh that was part satisfaction and part sadness; I was left hoping that I would see these characters again."
"Beautifully descriptive, well written, lyrical, lush, and intensely romantic, this infinitely touching, bittersweet story from James (Dracula, My Love) will weave its way into readers' hearts, with its complex characters and compelling emotions sure to linger long after the last page has been turned. While not a romance in the truest sense, this novel will have a poignant appeal for romance as well as paranormal fans and provides a slim glimmer of hope for the optimists among us."
The Authors Speak
"Syrie James (bestselling author of such runaway hits as "Lost Memoirs of Jane Austen" and "Dracula, My Love") jumps into the urban fantasy game with her latest read... Once I read "Nocturne", I realized that this was a story that she was supposed to tell. My wish is that the urban fantasy crowd will discover this one first and then reflect on James' entire body-of-work and see what a talented writer they've discovered... The writer really honed the craft and perfected the game... this is one of those books that is hard to tear away from...
Final Verdict? 4.5 out of 5. An upturn in the urban fantasy game and worthy of your embrace."
"As the sexual tension increases and [Nicole's] imagination runs rampant in this mountain seclusion, she readily makes excuses, only to discover that her wildest dreams, or nightmares, are now her reality... Like the iconic vampires of Bram Stoker, Anne Rice, and even Stephenie Meyer, Michael has his impossible strengths and weaknesses... But it's his unlikely humanity, as well as his love for her that allowed him to hold his carnal instincts in check that endeared me most... Tauntingly compelling, the ending left me spent... The haunting Nocturne is the perfect escape book for romance readers with some pretty steamy love scenes sure to warm you to your toes these cold, winter months."
Monsters and Critics
"Reminiscent of an old gothic romance... this bittersweet love story involves the deepest secrets, dreams and passion of two beautifully developed characters."
Night Owl Reviews
"From the first time I saw the cover to the first time Nicole meets Michael I was hooked... It was all very seductive."
"It feels like the first movement of a symphony; you know there is more to the story. The novel is a reminder par excellence that a story doesn't end just because the book does."
Library Journal, January 14, 2011
Unconscious and stranded in the Colorado Rockies after her car skids off an icy road during a blizzard, Nicole Whitcomb awakes in the magnificent, isolated mountain home of the astonishingly good-looking man who rescued her. Michael Tyler is brilliant, reclusive, enigmatic, and a potentially deadly, centuries-old vampire. Now, snowbound together until the storm ends and the roads can be cleared, they begin a wary, star-crossed journey from attraction to passion as Nicole's fears and Michael's bloodlust war with their love for each other. Beautifully descriptive, well written, and simply plotted, this story spans only four days and features just two characters, but as the story progresses they grow individually, as well as in their relationship, and are profoundly changed as a result.
Verdict Lyrical, lush, and intensely romantic, this infinitely touching, bittersweet story from James (Dracula, My Love) will weave its way into readers' hearts, with its complex characters and compelling emotions sure to linger long after the last page has been turned. While not a romance in the truest sense, this novel will have a poignant appeal for romance as well as paranormal fans and provides a slim glimmer of hope for the optimists among us. And the fact that they had so much in common with one another also made this believable. I've seen quite a few reviews about how some did not like the ending, or they wish it could have gone another way. I found the ending true to real life and circumstance, and I felt it was a perfect ending to their story. This book had me in tears quite a few times. Especially when Nicole and Michael shared their demons from their past. I do not want to give anything away for those who have not read this book. But it is Haunting, Romantic, Sexy, Emotional, and Bittersweet. I highly recommend this read.
I really enjoyed the little details that made up Michael's character. He is a complex character with a history and hobbies and interests. Nicole is a young accomplished woman and I was able to connect with her character. She had a great voice, and believable reactions. For instance, she starts becoming very suspicious of Michael's behaviors and his medical condition (hemophiliac)and Nicole reacts in fear (although she is enamored by him) which I'd like to think that the majority of the population would also react in such ways if ever stuck in that situation. But in the majority of vampire novels that I have read, there is never that most basic, common reaction.
Now, as for the ending ... it is bittersweet. I appreciate what James did and why she did it. It is unique and has stayed with me.
I would recommend this to anyone looking for a paranormal romance with a vampire and a bit of a twist. But if you are looking for the fairy tale ending, this is not the book for you.
Curious attraction fuels this odd companionship through their common interest in books when she discovers his first edition collections of classic literature represented by Daniel Defoe, Jane Austen, the Bronte sisters, Bram Stoker, Mark Twain... When she asks if she can borrow one, he answers,
"'Whatever you like, Miss Whitcomb.' She heard something different in his voice--a quieter, mellower tone that he'd yet exhibited - and she turned to look at him. He was leaning up against his desk, his arms crossed over his chest, his long legs stretched out before him. His guard was down, and he was studying her with an expression that resembled something like tentative delight. It was the first time he'd looked at her that way - as if she might prove to be an interesting human being after all and not just an inconvenience. It wasn't the most flattering look in the world, and yet the newfound warmth in his blue eyes made her heart skitter. `This isn't Pride and Prejudice. You can call me Nicole.'" Page 49.
As the sexual tension increases and her imagination runs rampant in this mountain seclusion, she readily makes his excuses, only to discover that her wildest dreams, or nightmares, are now her reality. Will I ruin it for you if I tell you that yes, Michael is a vampire? Like the iconic vampires of Bram Stoker, Anne Rice, and even Stephenie Meyer, Michael has his impossible strengths and weaknesses. When Nicole realizes what he is, the shock and fear that she has fallen for a vampire sets her on a dangerous escape.
But it's his unlikely humanity, as well as his "love for her" that allowed him "to hold his carnal instincts in check" that endeared me most. As the sun comes out and the roads have cleared, Nicole and Michael must find a way to co-exist if their forbidden love is to survive.
Tauntingly compelling, the ending left me spent. Let's just say however, thankfully Syrie James included an Author's Note (and helpful Author's Questions and Answers) that gave me hope (or at least wishful thinking) that she might revisit Nicole and Michael's love story in the future. If not, let me be the first to petition such a work! The haunting Nocturne is the perfect escape book for romance readers with some pretty steamy love scenes sure to warm you to your toes these cold, winter months. Enjoy! (as posted at Austen Prose)

I really loved this book so much that I finished it in two days, once you start you have to find out what will happen between these two. I enjoyed reading the sexual tension brewing between Nicole and Michael, and Michaels reactions towards Nicole, having her in such close quarters he can't resist getting to know her and eventually fall in love with her. This is a love which is destined to change their lives forever. I don't know if there is going to be a second book but I really hope there is, I want to know what is going to happen next between these two.
Unfortunately, I was surprised by the slow, sentimental pace of Nicole and Michael's romance in favor of the passionate, plot-driven books I had come to expect from James. However, after reading other reviews, I have come to realize that this book was just not my style. Many readers raved about the slow build-up and relatable love story and it is well written.
The story takes place in the snowy, Colorado mountains in current day, where the main character, Nicole, finds herself snowed into a beautiful chalet with the perfect stranger. It has the potential to be a searing romance, but I thought as delicious as the stormed in concept was, it limited the story. Moreover, I wanted to find more fault in James' characters but, although both had overcome horrors in their past, they were in many ways faultless.
If you are like me and enjoy a fast-paced, plot-driven romance, capable of transporting you through time, I strongly suggest indulging in Syrie James' other novels. This book is not a representation of all that she is capable of. Syrie James is an incredible author with the ability to fully engage her readers and leave them reading into the wee hours of the morning on bated breath. This book just didn't do anything for me; I found it unremarkable.
