Play It Yet Again, Mr. Eddie Muller! Thank You once again for the continued excellence that explodes out of the pages of this 240 page Magnum, Noir City Annual #7! This yearly publication contains the very best of The Film Noir Foundation's quarterly E-magazine. It is a yearly round-up of a compendium of essays, interviews, profiles, tributes, dvd and Blu-ray, as well as film reviews. The Film Noir Foundation is the brain-child of Eddie Muller, renowned novelist & "noirchaeologist". The foundations directive and advisory council consist of an eclectic mix of artists, film distributors, & industry professionals. This yearly publication is it's annual print anthology. From this year's excellent front cover illustration of a Danish film poster of "In A Lonely Place", starring Bogart, until the very last glossy covered page of excellent and rare photos, posters, lobby cards, & rare six-sheet posters, this issue shoots right up there to the top, just as in the other yearly editions. Examples of the individual sections include ESSAYS, which features an excellent one titled Lost Trails, written by Imogen Sara Smith. In this one, the author explores "Film Noir On The American Frontier". This features analysis and comparisons given to such Western-Noir films such as "Pursued"(1947), "Blood On The Moon"(1948), "Ramrod"(1947), and "The Naked Spur"(1953). Of course, the subject of a Western being labeled a Noir film, has long been a debate among noir scholars for years & the author gives her reasons why they should be included. In NOIR VIXENS, author Christa Faust explores the neo-femme-fatale in the recent neo-noir world from the 1980's to the present time. These range from Kathleen Turner as Matty Walker in 1981's "Body Heat", Sharon Stone as Catherine Trammell in 1992's "Basic Instinct", to my personal favorite, Linda Fiorentino, as Bridget Gregory in 1994's "The Last Seduction". Under the Profile section, we receive "Lost In Translation", by Steve Kronenberg, which explores the tragic legacy of the incredible actor, Laird Cregar. Under APPRECIATIONS, Eddie Muller, himself, delivers bigtime with which is "The Kingpin Of Capers"?, comparing "The Asphalt Jungle"(1950) with the French Classic, "Rififi"(1955). The article is titled "The Big Knockover". Muller makes his case for each film as the Kingpin. Another section is titled PRIME CUTS. and features an article by Duane Swiercynski titled PRIME CUTS:"Cisco Pike", My Favorite neo-noir, released in 1972, It stars Kris Kristofferson, Karen Black, and Gene Hackman. Moving onward, the next section is titled, BOOK VS. FILM, and features the comparison as written by Ben Terrall. A new section this year is titled NOIR AT HOME and explores the latest dvd and Blu-ray releases, such as "Out Of The Past"(1947), by Glenn Erickson. The last section is FILM REVIEWS, and includes "The Drop"(2014), which is written by Eddie Muller. Again, the real payoff here is that all of the $ earned by the book goes right back into preserving, restoring, & digging up even more lost noir treasures, and bringing them back to either the film screen or re-mastered for dvd or Blu-ray. So, essentially for all true noir lovers, you simply cannot go wrong. In addition, the low cost of the book has remained a real steal in itself. I have looked forward to these annual print books for the past 4 years and continue to be elated over each and every edition. Also, Amazon makes it easy for the buyer with its handy viewing guide to preview each issue with their "Look Inside" feature. MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! SMRZ!

Another packed issue.
Several articles devoted to Ray Milland.
Christa Faust contributes an essay on modern femme fatales.
Three reviews of “Silent Noir” were interesting, though a stretch since Noir, as recognized, began in the 40’s.
Numerous pages on “Western Noir,” equally intriguing, with more credibility since so many Noir directors and actors worked in select grim, fatalistic Westerns.
Also interviews, DVD reviews, tributes, dozens of other essays.
As always, must read for Film Noir aficionados.
Sadly, this has gone OP and prices on the secondary market are ridiculous.
Here’s hoping the editors reissue back installments.

I have Annuals No 2 through 7 and they are ALL nothing short of fantastic reading for those of us who value Noir films. Eddie and his writers bring Noir to life in these Annuals and there is nothing around to equal them.
