Jake Hinkson is the author of the award-winning novels Hell On Church Street and No Tomorrow, the short story collection The Deepening Shade, and the essay collection The Blind Alley: Exploring Film Noir’s Forgotten Corners. His books have been translated into French and Italian, and he is the 2018 recipient of France's prestigious Grand Prix de littérature policière (for No Tomorrow), as well as the 2016 recipient of the Prix Mystère de la critique (for Hell On Church Street). Born in Arkansas and raised in the Ozarks, he currently lives in Chicago.

Not an overview of Noir, nor an introductory book, and perhaps not the best for novices.
The publication assumes reader possesses passing familiarity with the genre.
Deeply entertaining for film buffs, covering a lot of interesting ground.
Articles include Brit-Noir, lesbian characters, the Whistler (OTR series),
Book vs Film comparisons, Greenstreet & Lorre, Modern Noirs ...
Packed with photos and drawings.

Sadly, this has gone OP and prices on the secondary market are ridiculous.
Here’s hoping the editors reissue back installments.

For the uninitiated, the Noir City Sentinel Newsletter is the quarterly electronic magazine of the Film Noir Foundation, "a non-profit public benefit corporation created as an educational resource regarding the cultural, historical, and artistic significance of Film Noir as an original American cinematic movement." Over the past few years, the good folks at the Film Noir Foundation have culled the best pieces and packaged them in handsome annual volumes. This is the latest and greatest offering. Novice to Noir & A Happy Customer

As a novice to noir, I found this to be an excellent compilation with interesting and well-written discussions on important themes as well as historical notes on each film reviewed. After devouring the book (it's easy to get hooked) I felt like an insider. I especially appreciated the thoughtful notes and comparisons with international Noir films. The book itself has been lovingly printed on beautiful stock and abounds with images. Definitely something I can share with friends as a gift as well as decorate my coffee table. You won't be disappointed with Annual #3.

i just got this in the mail and really enjoyed it. all of the articles are really fascinating. i read volumes one and two and was even more impressed with this volume and made me feel like a film noir insider!
