The Windows 8 display and navigation takes awhile to get used to. I have Windows 8 on my touch-screen PC and almost never use it as the Windows 7 format works fine. Now that I appreciate the advances in Windows Phone 8, maybe I'll use Windows 8 (PC version) more.
Setting up the synchronizing of email was easy, but syncing the calendar and contacts took quite an effort. The Microsoft, AT&T, and Nokia web sites have instructions for syncing, but it is not clear which software and platforms are used in each process. My Windows 8 PC runs both Outlook mail and Windows mail. Google hosts my mail. AT&T provides the communications service. Nokia also has some server processes. I ended up with multiple email accounts, contact lists, and calendars on my PC before getting the right combination on the phone.
Downloading apps is easy and fast from the MIcrosoft Store. Initially I was concerned that a couple of my old favorites were not programmed for Windows Phone, but most others are now available. The apps start up and run fast, and the display makes them easier to use.
On the hardware side Nokia gets it right again... With a high end processor the speed never fails to impress the screen is a joy to look at and the super sensitive touch works perfectly while riding my dirt bikes with gloves. Additionally the phone is pretty thin, takes abuse (though I have a case) and has second to none battery life (Literally: http://wmpoweruser.com/nokia-lumia-1520-demonstrates-amazing-battery-life-in-gsmarena-test/).
Only downside I can think of is occasional mis-calibration of the display brightness when set to auto (comes up way too dim) but always corrects its self within 10 seconds and occurs pretty infrequently when you unlock the phone... Basically a non issue.
As far as apps go I have everything I want though I am not a huge mobile gamer so I can comment on that but my phone currently has 325 apps on it about 80-100 of which get used once a week or more and includes all the big name apps (most of which were missing when I first got my phone. As few frequently used common sample:
Facebook page manager (full feature client for managing pages like businesses, events and causes)
Youtube (though I normally use one of the many excellent third party clients since the 1st party app isn't as good)
WPtorrentpro (bit torrent client)
Maaloo Outdoors (a outdoor mapping and tracking client that allows saving of track including import and export with dropbox and skydrive support... Great for ATV/Dirt biking, hiking, etc)
