This is the fourth and final book in the Perpetual Campaign series.
The political saga of Clarissa Jennings continues with the same cast of characters on both sides of the aisle that have appeared in the previous books in the series. Even the politically inept Alex Hogan, who started the series as a candidate for congressman, shows up this time as a US Senator.
Trying to juggle the responsibilities of the office of governor with the continuing requests for non-state business events all over the country and with two young children and a husband needing her attention, Clarissa somehow manages to find time to deliver the keynote address at her party's convention. That speech raises her visibility not only to members of the public, but also to other politicians in both parties who envy her popularity and success.
Meanwhile there are other races for other offices going on that involve her current staff and past, present, and new enemies. There's a lot happening in the book, mostly politically motivated, but also some trials and tribulations outside the political sphere.
Just as with the other books in the series, this one goes inside the workings of politics to show the inner workings of the campaign staff, speech writers, spin, bloggers, favor-trading, delegate counting, and fund raising that goes on at every level of politics.
By the end of the book, you'll be wishing there were a Clarissa-clone out there somewhere right now willing and ready to run for national office.
Now, as the Non-Campaigh ends and Clarissa Jennings finds herself inside the beltway, all bets are off. A whole new set of rules apply. There are NO rules, and may the best (wo)man win. I love Truscott's style of writing. He credits his wife with being the better writer in the family. Whether true or not, Mr. Truscott ranks among those writers whom I admire the most. May he continue to enthrall us.
Another gripping and fast-reading instalment in Truscott's ever-evolving Perpetual Campaign series. Truscott's strength here is the dialogue, which has matured over the series and is both compelling and convincing.
For me, the politics remains a backdrop, the real story the people. Especially Governor Clarissa Jennings, who is stronger than ever, yet just as vulnerable as the young idealist she once was.
I enjoyed the surprise ending. No spoiler alert, but in hindsight, it's what the story had been building towards.
I don't want to give spoiler, but the end is shocking and then the epilogue shocking again.
When Chris continues this series I will buy and read.
