Product Description

A pair of 5dBi, medium-sized, lightweight antennas with 978MHz and 1090MHz center frequencies, respectively, designed for portable ADS-B applications.

Also included are a pair of 15cm (6") male MCX to female SMA pigtail cables, made from RG316 cable for low loss. As such, these antennas can be used with MCX-input or SMA-input devices without further purchase.

Each antenna is only 20g and 19cm (7.5") long, 5dBi, with a VSWR of 1.5:1 or better at their respective center frequencies. A handy flexible antenna elbow facilitates a wide range of mounting options.

I wanted a tuned antenna with a male SMA connector and this its the bill! Happy with the purchase. As others have mentioned, it would be nice to order and pay for only the 1090 antenna.

The NooElec 1090 directly attached to the USB dongle doesn't perform quite as well as the RadarBox 1090 (which is a mag-mount + cable) but it close!

For working with ADS-B flight tracking, these antennas are a huge improvement over both the untuned generic antenna that usually ships with SDR dongles and the tuned 1090/978 MHz desktop antennas. I put my antenna in a first-floor window, and I went from a 25- to 30-mile range with a desktop antenna to a range of 50-60 miles with this antenna. I recently moved the rig upstairs and stuck this antenna in a bedroom window...and I'm now working with an effective range of 100+ miles.

The antenna for 1090 MHz is working great. Because of restrictions, I can't place anything outside, so I'm limited to what I can place in a window, due to metal and foil in the outside wall. With a compromise antenna (a 2m/440 long rubber duck) I was getting OK results out to 50 miles, and spotty results to 100 miles. With this antenna, I have solid results out to 100 miles, and then spotty results to 150 miles. After two weeks now, I can safely say it doubled the number of planes I see each day, and I get five times the number of position reports. My only gripe is that I have no need for the other antenna. I tried it, but there is almost no activity in my area-- that second antenna will sit in the junk drawer, probably forever.

I purchased these antennas to replace my existing ones used on my Stratux ADS-B IN receiver. The antenna hinges that are next to the connectors became worn and would not stay in place when positioned to form a 90 degree angle. This wear was caused by straightening the antennas for transport in my flight bag and then forming a 90 degree angle for use in the cockpit. The hinges are plastic so one shouldn't expect them to maintain their functionality forever. All in all, the replacement price is low and is well worth the cost to replace old with new.

It needs to be a better connection if the antenna is to bend up at the joint or is able to be unscrewed for storage. As it is, the plastic outer shell doesn't stay connected with the base and so it falls apart.
