Product Description

Not your average RGB LED strip! Not only are these fully waterproofed, but each LED is also independently addressable, opening up entirely new lighting possibilities. Each LED is powered by a WS2801 IC.

Each end of the strip has 4 wire leads leading to a JST-SM connector, female for input and male for output.

If you do not require connection to another string you can cut off the male output connector and use it to connect to the female connector. Connectors can also be removed completely if not necessary for your application--there is plenty of wire lead to allow for a direct-solder connection.

For you Arduino users we highly recommend the open-source fastspi library as jumping point for your own code.

The WS2801 employs a 2-wire serial data connection, similar to SPI or I2C. ICs are chained together which means whole strings can be controlled using just 2 pins on your microcontroller.

Data is clocked in starting with the MSB of the red gray scale data and ending with the LSB of the blue gray scale data.

Easy and Looks Great

This strip is bright and beautiful! I found out that if you're hooking this up to an Arduino that you have to make sure the strip and the Arduino share a common ground, otherwise you'll get a bunch of random colors. Easy to cut (can be cut between any led I believe), and the waterproofing is nice. And as others have mentioned, the plastic does smell pretty bad when first opened.

I'd recommend using this library to control it (https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit-WS2801-Library). Also look here for some good information on wiring and power (http://learn.adafruit.com/digital-led-strip). When running the rainbow test from the Adafruit library, I measured the strip drawing anywhere from 0.3 Amps to 0.8 Amps, usually averaging at about 0.5 amps. I'd imagine it would be closer to 1 Amp if all of them were set to white at full brightness.

If you're looking for a cool Arduino project, this is the thing buy!

These were my step into addressable lighting. They are a bit costly for being outdated lights, but these are sturdy. I'm a fan of the ws2812B led strips as the addressable unit is IN the LED and they are brighter than these, HOWEVER...if you are a four pin fan these lights are for you. the ws2812b lights are three pin to do the same thing. ;)
I would buy from these people again on the fact that they are very helpful and very courteous! If you have any problems with their lights I urge that you contact them directly first and work with them. they will work with you to help resolve your problems. :)

Great Arduino project addition.

I have this hooked to an Arduino Uno to use for programming practice. You can get example code from SparkFun (look for WS2801) and the whole strip can be powered from the Arduino itself. Each LED is split up into RGB components and they can be sent a color value based on brightness of each of the three colors. The strip is sealed in a plastic/rubbery clear sleeve that is hard to glue down (feels a little like silicone). Check out youtube for ws2801 videos, I found them inspiring.

Funny smell

Good looking strip, the plastic smells terrible, I'm hoping that fades in time, I haven't tested it yet, but I wanted to make a note on here for other buyers. The connector that is shown in the last picture has nothing to do with this product. The connector is four pins side by side with a rectangular housing, soldered to the strip on either end. The title is misleading '4-pin IP68 connectors included' should read more like 'waterproof rating IP68, 4pin connectors attached.'

Great with Arduino and you can individually light up any LED you want!

* works great with Arduino and is easy to program
* WS2801 ICs makes this LED strip to light up each individual LEDs at your wish.
* need only 5v, so can work on USB power
* water proof casing
* you can cut each led strip individually and can use it and it still works fine
* you can connect multiple 1 m led strips and connect it , and still it will work

Cons:
Using this for about 2 weeks. Have not noticed any cons yet!

The lights worked perfectly out of the box, albeit a few modifications to the connector were required so it would play nice with my micro controller, but other than that, this thing works wonderfully. It's going to be used for a robotics project I have for my undergrad class indicating different states of the machine, but it would work perfectly as ambient lighting for rooms etc.

I echo the other reviewer's comment about the plastic casing... it does smell horrible.

Im sure someone better than I at circuits would know more. I will probably end up linking my arduino to have it work but in hindsight, I would get a different strip.
