Product Description

Not your average RGB LED strip! Not only are these fully waterproofed to IP68 standards, with crystal-clear PVC jacketing injected with high-quality epoxy, but each LED is also independently addressable, opening up entirely new lighting possibilities. Addressable LEDs allow each individual LED to have a distinct color & brightness to every other LED. It allows you to display most anything on an LED strip that can be displayed on this screen! Full color video, signs, complex chase patterns, persistence of vision projects--really, the sky is the limit.

Each pixel is on a separate PCB, which allows you to cut up the strips into smaller segments if required for your installation. Each PCB is about 2/3 of an inch.

Each PLCC-6 (5050) WS2812B LED is controlled by an WS2811 IC die located inside--nifty, right? We also carry these special LEDs in our store. WS2812B are a much improved version of WS2812 & WS2812S. Changes include higher brightness and reverse-polarity protection. What's not to like?

Each end of the strip has a 3 pin JST-SM connector: Green=5V DC Red=Data/Clock In Black=Ground The male connector is input and the female connector is output.

For those who want a ready-to-go solution we sell a highly-configurable RGB controller compatible with WS2811-powered pixels such as these.

For you Arduino users we highly recommend the open-source fastspi library as jumping point for your own code.

The WS2811 employs a 1-wire serial data connection. ICs are chained together which means whole strings can be controlled using just 1 pin on your microcontroller. For more information we recommend reviewing the datasheet or contacting us for further technical details.

I'm using these with my Arduino Mega, trying to set up the ever-popular MSGEQ7 chip for some music reacting fun, along with playing around with other effects. these are very bright, and cycle through any color you could possibly imagine. They are addressable/digital, meaning ANY LED can be ANY combination of color/brightness/animation/anything. The possibilities are endless (or at least limited by your software coding abilities). On top of that, it comes sealed in a waterproof cover (not that important for my application but nice nevertheless), and BOTH ends come pre-soldered with a 3 pin cable to help with attaching it to other things (or another cable). That is very nice in case I decide I want to buy another (I might), it'll make it a snap to attach together. I'm using a 5V 4A power supply I found on amazon to power these and they look amazing.

A little help to get them working ASAP:

Search Google for "Adafruit Neopixel Library" and also their "Uberguide" on these. That is example code that gets these working in no time, without it, I would've taken forever to get them running. It has wiring information and hints and tricks that were unbelievably useful.

If there's any questions I'm happy to answer them.

These are great. They were cheaper than another brand I have been buying for a long time, and they look great! They work great with Arduino/adafruit controllers. I will be purchasing these again for my next LED project.

Works great. Same as NeoPixel but a lot cheaper. Look up the NeoPixel library for Arduino for some project ideas.

Arrived on time as expected. The lights look awsome !! I am using an OSEPP Uno R3 Plus to control them with 2 AA batteries to power them and they appear to work just fine. I like the waterproof casing. Very nice. It provides support for these seemingly delicate parts. The power connectors and cables are attached very securely. They are not going to come off even if you tug on them firmly. I did a search on 'Adafruit Neopixel Library' as another poster had suggested and got it working with the examples they supplied on that site. The only issue I encountered (which was my lack of fully reading the directions) was that I didn't attach ground to the power supply AND the Arduino. It worked but in a rather weird manner some lights would turn on in a different color or appear 'glitchy'. After I attached to GND everything worked fine. So perhaps that had something to do with other posters having issues with the lights. Again nothing was defective with the product.

Update: 3/25/16
I liked this so much that I ordered a second one. I think a repeat buyer speaks for the product and the seller more than a star rating.

All of the LEDs light up and the quality of the waterproofing is outstanding.

The only issue is that this ad says it's a 4-pin JST connector- the product shown and the product that I received use a 3-pin JST connector.

not working, I have followed the described wiring on the LED strip, i.e red connected to +5V, blue to GRD (on the arduino only) and green connected to pin 8, where I have the following code:

#include <FastLED.h>

#define NUM_LEDS 60
#define DATA_PIN 8

CRGB leds[NUM_LEDS];

void setup() {
FastLED.addLeds<NEOPIXEL, DATA_PIN>(leds, NUM_LEDS);
}

void loop() {

for(int i = 0; i < 59; i++) {
leds[i] = CRGB::Red; // set our current dot to red
FastLED.show();
leds[i] = CRGB::Black; // set our current dot to black before we continue
}

}

However nothing is lighting up! I'd like to return this as I've already wasted a few hours of my life. Could someone from tech support take a look at what I'm doing? I've heard reports of having to ground the blue wire separately to 'power supply' but I am connecting from my macbook air so ground on the arduino should flow back through the usb to the power supply right?

comes with no documentation and the product is not exactly as described elsewhere, so in the first experiments probably blew up the first pixels. The wires that come with it are a bit confusing and there is a risk that you hook it up improperly. I cut the string after the first 3 pixels (that I probably blew out) and the rest is doing fine. The weather proof material makes it a bit cumbersome to cut the string up (you have to peel off the silicone). Also there is a 3M adhesive strip on the back and the paper sticker was easily getting loose - I should have read the product description better (I would have chosen one without for my project).

Guides elsewhere on the internet recommend to power it from a separate power supply and protect the arduino with a resistor and a capacitor (power spikes). Made it a bit more cumbersome to debug the circuit. You can use the Adafruit neopixel libraries without a problem.

for a first time project LED string project I would recommend to buy one from the known suppliers that provide documentation. This string is great if you want to scale up and save some costs (and you have create some skill hooking this up).
