What can I say, I have been impressed with all of Nooelecs products, of which I have several! This Sawbird+ for GOES is perfect for my application which was to build a GOES receiving station from a Raspberry PI, and a Nooelec Smartee XTR with an attached GOES Sawbird+. I like that it has multiple ways to power it depending on the application. As an anecdotal side note, it works great in the cold as well, have had -2 f temps and all is working well! Highly recommended!usradioguy.com
it works but i didnt find any documentation for it. it is a bit confusing in that the USB power socket is at the other end to the Biostee feed end which is something you need to watch out for.when going to pair it with an SDR.

Below is a quote from a reviewer. "It would be better if there was an option to down convert the signal for long cable runs, so that is why I am giving it 4/5. " Well...add about $1,000.00 to the cost and they can add the "Down-converter" . That's like buying a tire and complaining it didn't come with a car...lol!!! Back to the pre-amp...works just as it should and the cost is very fair!! Thomas - KT4WO
I set it up in a way where it was shielded from weather as best as I could while not spending a lot of money and it died recently. I have contacted support on the website multiple times about information needed for repair or a replacement because it is within the so called "two year warranty" period but have gotten no response despite waiting as long as a month before I tried again. A text book example of the poor customer service one would expect from fly by night Chinese companies at times but from a company based in Canada? This makes no sense at all and I am currently looking elsewhere for a replacement multistage LNA and saw filter combination for GOES.
Worked great for tracking radiosondes. Sadly, after about a year it stopped functioning. I have two of these. One has been outside mounted in a waterproof housing for GOES reception and continues to function.
I bought two of these for GOES wxsat reception, one worked as you would expect, the other was noisy and the gain would keep changing. Contacted support and after playing 20 questions about what software, feed, antenna and sdr I was using they just disappeared. Ended up finding the problem on my own, the center pin on the input connector had a blob of solder on it but had not flowed to the board. Re-soldered and now it works like the first one.
The SAWbird+ brought the signal above the noise so well. Considering cascading to try and get better S/N ratio with grid dish at 45 degrees North. The small compact design fits nicely in my outdoor case and is powered off an ASUS Tinkerboard via USB without power starving it to shut down. My questions to tech support were promptly answered. This device is great when you have an SDR dongle closely located.
Works as described for the GOES HRIT decoder project. (I used a pi 3B+ and a grid dish and homemade feed out of stuff I already had) It would be better if there was an option to down convert the signal for long cable runs, so that is why I am giving it 4/5. But overall it was a really fun project, and this a a big part of what makes it work hardware wise.
I would give this 5 stars but the USB power does not work at all. Still works with bias t though. Decided to keep it anyways. I have had a few items from NooElec arrive as malfunctioning. Overall I am happy with their products because the price allows hobbyists to experiment without going broke.
