About the author

After teaching English literature in the UK, Japan and Malaysia, Helen Harper left behind the world of education following the worldwide success of her Blood Destiny series of books. She is a professional member of the Alliance of Independent Authors and writes full time, thanking her lucky stars every day that's she lucky enough to do so!
Helen has always been a book lover, devouring science fiction and fantasy tales when she was a child growing up in Scotland.
She currently lives in Edinburgh with far too many cats – not to mention the dragons, fairies, demons, wizards and vampires that seem to keep appearing from nowhere.

In what universe is it remotely believable that some hardbitten crime lord (oh, sorry, father figure for the downtrodden) would have a conversation with a sexy woman (vampire) in a bar about how "no one wanted to follow him any more"? If he was capable of that kind of interaction with others, he would never have gotten to the position he did in the first place.
I get the feeling the author doesn't know what story she wants to tell here- "hardbitten crime lords are just regular folks trying to make sense of their place in this crazy mixed up world like you and me"?
Uhhhhh...okay... Yeah, it doesn't track. What's really disappointing is she nailed it with the previous Emma Bellamy series (and I was looking forward to more stories sweet in this world). In that series, her Lord Horvath has a weakness for Emma that is at odds with his more "normal" predatory king persona; she is this exception to his reign of power and unfettered dominance because of love/sex/etc etc etc- ok, I'll buy that. It's barely believable, but it does track.
But Devereau Webb having an existential crisis that DOESN'T prominently feature everybody and their brother trying to usurp him, his power, his wealth, his reputation- or take control of his communication network at the very least?... Instead, he's wandering around the city, complaining to random strangers that he's lost his power base, for heaven's sake- and someone DOESN'T immediately try to, I don't know, kill him??
I don't care if he's some superwolf. He's a superwolf without a pack- that's the point of his barroom whining: the story can't be anything other than a story about immediate, relentless attacks on his disintegrating empire and his response to this (because it is believable that his sudden change in status (in this world, into a werewolf) would cause some of his followers to abandon ship- but others who saw opportunities in the shift and the uncertainty of change should have made power plays of their own).
I think Helen Harper may be self-published, but issues with the believability of the storyline is something that any half decent editor (formal or informal) should have picked up on, and if I remember correctly, this is a problem I've had with this author in the past: she's unpredictable- sometimes it's really good; sometimes you're left scratching your head, going, huh? Is this the same author?
HH has started 2021 on fire!!! She mentions that more titles starring #DevScar (better than #DevLett) are in the works, AND the fourth book in the Firebrand series releases May 3rd - Scorched Heart!

That was some closing chapter. Seriously, I’m caught between WTF, huh? and alllllrrrriggghhhhtttyyyy then (in my best Ace Ventura impression).
It took forever and a day for me to finally crack this book open and read. Normally Harper’s spin off books don’t work well. Seriously, they usually run out of steam and I feel like Harper can’t quite figure out where to take the characters next and it shows... big time (City of Magic series anyone).
I was pleasantly surprised that that wasn’t necessarily the case here. We got a thorough book that did not drag in the slightest and even better we spent some time with characters that I definitely wanted to explore more of (looking at you Scarlett). But this wasn’t a full blown home run here, I felt like there were a lot of loose threads that weren’t addressed and then there was the pesky issue of time. It seemed like this entire book took place in a matter of days! We got to hear several times over that the full moon was near and blah blah blah. Which led me to wonder just how much time had passed between the third Firebrand novel and this one. It seemed like it should’ve been a week at best. But considering the full moon happens every 4 weeks or so the time didn’t exactly make much sense. Then there was the issue that Webb was allowed to run around “unchecked” for weeks due to his unique supernatural status and it wasn’t addressed at all until he was forced to change his address.
But I liked the story and am looking forward to what happens in clearly a couple of days, which is Webb’s first full moon!

A fast paced and thrilling ride, Dev is a character to watch out for, building a new team of people around him and starting from scratch all over again, in a way that completely unsettles the supernatural community around him. Having captured the interest if Scarlet, the hot and capable vampire loyal to Lord Horvath, they discover a crime deeply disturbing and risk their lives to bring about justice. I loved every second and can't wait to read more about Dev, Scarlet and what is sure to be a new gang.
