Product Description

From the Manufacturer

Darksiders is a third-person, single player action/adventure game inspired by the characters, themes and mythology of the apocalypse and the battle of Armageddon as described by the Book of Revelation. But this modern interpretation is not your run of the mill Sunday school stroll through the New Testament. In the game players take on the role of "War," one of the dread Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. But things are not as they were. .caption { font-family: Verdana, Helvetica neue, Arial, serif; font-size: 10px; font-weight: bold; font-style: italic; } ul.indent { list-style: inside disc; text-indent: -15px; } table.callout { font-family: verdana; font-size: 11px; line-height: 1. 3em; } td.vgoverview { height: 125px; background: #9DC4D8 url(https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/G/01/electronics/detail-page/callout-bg.png) repeat-x; border-left: 1px solid #999999; border-right: 1px solid #999999; padding-left: 20px; padding-right: 20px; padding-bottom: 10px; width: 250px; font-family: verdana; font-size: 12px; }

The Story
Deceived by the forces of evil into prematurely bringing about the end of the world, War - the first Horseman of the Apocalypse - stands accused of breaking the sacred law by inciting a war between heaven and hell. Dishonored and stripped of his powers, War must return to Earth to search for the truth and punish those responsible. But there is no clear definition of good and evil in this tale. Hunted by a vengeful group of angels, War must take on the forces of Hell, forge uneasy alliances with the very demons he hunts, and journey across the ravaged remains of the Earth on his quest for vindication. But the answers he seeks will reveal a deep conspiracy in which War will find, and have to resign himself to the reality that although once the hand of God, he is just a pawn in the eternal battle between heaven and hell.

A mix of exploration and fast-paced action gameplay,
Darksiders is based on nonlinear play situations. That means that as War slowly regains his previous powers of destruction and carnage in order to continue his search for the origins and reasons for his betrayal, players will be able to backtrack to areas and scenarios that they may have left unexplored upon first discovery. Almost all areas of the game can be explored and some of the things players will find as they do so are treasure chests, health chests, and bonus life points, etc. The ability to go back and explore areas is important, especially as the game progresses and War finds himself up against enemies whose defeat require special skills and/or weaponry. As for combat gameplay, Darksiders features a variety of weapons--including blades and firearms--that can be used in combo moves or in single strikes. Some of these can be charged up for quick, but devastating attacks on enemies and all can be arranged on your controller's D-pad for easy and preferred access. Additional gameplay elements include the ability/necessity to fight from the back of your mount, Ruin, and the collection of the souls in the form of glowing orbs that fall to the ground as enemies are dispatched. The latter can be used to level up War with new items and abilities.

Varied Characters and Environments
Although players take on the imposing role or War,
Darksiders also contains a wide variety of equally intriguing and sometimes frightening characters. These include: an assortment of vengeful angels; demons, such as "the Jailer" whose body is made up of the remains of countless cadavers; a bestiary of wicked and vile creatures created to bolster the armies of hell on Earth; and Ruin, the trusty steed of War. Gameplay environments players will experience are equally varied, and include areas both underground and on the surface, that call to mind both familiar, if ruined modern urban environments, as well as ones seemingly pulled from the nightmarish scenes of the biblical apocalypse.

Key Features

  • Apocalyptic Power of War - Unleash the wrath of War, combining brutal attacks and supernatural abilities to decimate all who stand in your way.
  • Extreme Arsenal - Wield a devastating arsenal of angelic, demonic, and Earthly weapons, and blaze a trail of destruction atop Ruin, War's fiery phantom steed.
  • Epic Quest - Battle across the wastelands and demon-infested dungeons of the decimated Earth in your quest for vengeance and redemption.
  • Character Progression - Uncover powerful ancient relics, upgrade your weapons, unlock new abilities, and customize your gameplay style.
  • Battle Heaven and Hell - Battle against all who stand in your way—from war-weary angelic forces to hell's hideous demon hordes.
  • Weapons and Gear - Darksiders features an extensive arsenal and inventory of weapons and gear.
  • Varied Play Environments - Players will fight through varied environments, including those above and underground, and modern and nightmarishly mythical in design.

Im not much of a gamer, though my boyfriend is. I saw him playing this game after he installed in and he let me try it out...
Needless to say that four hours later I had already beat the first boss (Tiamat)
Is this game a cross between GOW and Zelda? Yes in a way, because of all the strategic puzzle-solving and the exploration of these amazing looking dungeons and gruesome, beastly demons.
The story line though is what I enjoy the most....A Nephilim horseman named War, killing both angels and demons? Yeah! The post-apocalypse themes keep this game entertaining and addicting, this game makes me want to know what's going to happen next, it has lots of suspense

Downside, is that once you defeat the mini bosses, they become normal enemies, and it takes forever to get health bars, and find Vulgrim to sell you items.

Currently I am stuck trying to fight off Silitha. I could use advice!
This game is at a surprisingly low price for how much fun it is. (12 bucks for the PC download. I've got an alienware, so graphics do come out amazing and sharp) Not done with this game yet, but I already pre-ordered Darksiders II!

I work as an engineering consultant and contractor using my own custom-built PC workstation to run 3D MCAD applications such as SolidWorks and PTC/Creo (formerly Pro/ENGINEER). To run these applications, I have a very fast i7 quad-core processor, 12 GBytes of RAM and an NVIDIA Quadro 4000 graphics card (running 1920 x 1080 resolution). Spending most of my time doing engineering work, I'm really not much for playing video games on a PC (or on a console). However, I was curious to see how well my PC workstation will run gaming software. I read a number of positive reviews regarding Darksiders and the game appeared to be a recent enough release that it should run well in Windows 7 (Professional) and running 64-bit.

I bought Darksiders as a download from Amazon which in turn was a download from Steam. I agree with some of the other reviews I have read where the download took forever, and twice for that matter, first from Amazon then from Steam. In both cases, it took a good 8 to 10 hours to download the software and I have a high-speed connection. I know the software downloaded for this game appears to be over 12 GBytes, but I regularly download software and updates for my 3D MCAD software applications with those downloads typically being 2 to 3 GBytes each time. For the 3D MCAD software, those downloads take no more than an hour or so to complete. It almost appears to me that whatever server and connection is being used at the other end by Amazon and by Steam, it appears to be running as slow as an old dial-up modem. I don't know if this is a lack of up-to-date hardware at the other end or maybe both the Amazon and the Steam sites are too crowded at any given time for the traffic they are trying to handle. No matter what, the bottom line is the downloading is way, way, way too slow and it would be nice if they got there speed up to at least an average DSL or cable modem high speed for the download.

Once the game was downloaded, I had no problem installing and activating the game. I had no driver or configuration issues, although my NVIDIA Quadro 4000 graphics card is set up with the latest graphics drivers including OpenGL, Direct X and Shader Modeler. My graphics card is also intelligent enough where it will switch automatically to the graphics drivers needed when I power up an application. For the 3D MCAD stuff, that software runs mostly in OpenGL. For gaming such as Darksiders, I'm assuming this stuff likes to run in Direct X and in Shader Modeler.

When I first powered up the game, everything worked fine from the keyboard. I went into the limited setup options available and maximized everything available. For both the little "movie" episodes during the game and for the actual gameplay itself, I think the graphics are great although I do agree with some other reviews I have read where the character graphics for War, the Watcher, Vulcrum, etc. are done very well, but the city buildings and objects are are a little "fuzzy" and not rendered quite as well (kind of like the building graphics you see in something like Google Earth), although the 3D space and views are done well. With my workstation and graphics setup, all motion and frame rates are nice and smooth with no choppiness or delays, but I kind of expect that with my fast processor and graphics needed to do 3D MCAD work.

I do agree with another complaint I read in these reviews that when I tried my existing Gravis gaming controller instead of the keyboard, that did not work well at all with the view direction locked into looking up at the sky at all times. I read you could either download and fool around with installing game controller drivers or use an Xbox game controller. I'm not all that fond of fooling around with drivers and running the risk of screwing up my system, so I went out and bought a standard Xbox controller. When I plugged it into my PC and started up the game, the Xbox controller worked fine and all functions worked properly. Also, the controls on the Xbox controller match all that's listed in the game documentation (which is rather lacking for a game this large and complex) and any online help hints during game play. So, I would recommend using an Xbox controller if you have one. I also played it with the PC keyboard, but using a controller seems a lot more intuitive than fumbling with hitting the right PC keyboard keys at any given time.

I've played the game about ten hours total so far per the running time count presented to you by Steam. Each time I play it, I get a little farther along with the game and learn more of the features and tricks you need to know. Like most RPG's, there's a lot to learn regarding collecting weapons and powers, and a lot to learn as to what you need to do in any given battle scene to defeat the enemy/demon at hand (I kind of like that you need to have War throw cars at Destroyer to weaken Destroyer so you can finish him off). So, I guess as I get farther along with the game, I'll learn more and discover more making this game a lot of fun even if you get addicted and spend hours and hours proceeding through the game. I think that approach in game and software design is called "positive re-enforcement". The more you learn successfully, you more you want to learn and keep on playing.

So overall, I like the game and I had little if any complaints getting the game to run properly (other than needing an Xbox controller and the slow download time). But maybe a lot of that has to do with my having a high-performance engineering PC workstation and a lot of bugs and problems had already been worked out in the past to get all my 3D MCAD software to run correctly.

It doesn't want to let you use anything but a 360 controller. Any other will not map properly and make them game unusable unless you go out and buy one pretty much. Shows how lazy the developers were in porting it from a console to PC. Would have been nice to know this minor detail before purchase.

**EDIT 9.2**

Found a workaround with the xbox360ce application. Still leaving it at one star since this is something that is forced by THQ being lazy and not patching the game in its two years since release.

Everything about this game is mediocre -- gameplay, graphics, story, voice acting, sound, et al. I don't know why I pressed on pretty far into it waiting for it do something interesting, but eventually I just reached the point of realizing my time is too valuable and there are too many better games out there to be wasting my time on Darksiders.

Great Sci-fi/legends story line. The graphic of the game is great. The game play is so so, you basically do the same old moves over and over again, but they did give you several variations. This game is a top 3 star game but the game play is just not there for me to give it a 4. For a 5 star, a game got to grab my attention and makes me want to play this game none-stop, and that hasn't happened yet. Overall good game, great price, give it a try!

When I saw that amazing had this on sale for $5 I couldn't resist. I saw an ad for Darksiders II and really wanted to try it out, but I always like to play the first games. I must say I am very impressed.

I had been having an urge to play something involving the four horsemen, so when I realized that's what these games were about I was very excited. With a little bit of tweaking I was able to get my game to think my ps3 controller was an Xbox controller by using motionjoy. It was a small pain, but so far that is the only problem I have with this game.

I love the story and I love the gameplay. I love upgrades and items and this game satisfies that need. The gameplay is similar to god of war with some devil may cry mixed in. For the price I paid, this game was an absolute steal.

I haven't experienced any glitches, graphic issues, or bugs. I do have a pretty high end pc though. If anyone is on the fence about buying a game, I would strongly suggest you to.
