Susan Anderson-Freed is the author of Colorwork Creations. She is a retired Professor of Computer Science at Illinois Wesleyan University and a published author in that field. She is the author Weaving a Web Site and co-author of Fundamentals of Data Structures in C. She has been knitting for 50 years, and sells her knitting patterns at local yarn stores. She has offered knitting workshops in Wisconsin, Illinois and Minnesota.

Nice Book to Augment One's Knitting Library

This knitting book by Susan Anderson-Freed, contains "25 Scandinavian, Icelandic and Fair Isle Accesories". When I purchased the book I thought it would contain more than accessories and at first was a little disappointed. However, the accessories are lovely. There are hats, mittens and gloves, socks and leg warmers

The hats are lovely and most appear to me to be in Fair Isle tradition. The mittens and gloves look Scandinavian and Norwegian. The socks and leg warmers are the strongest section of the book with the most patterns.

While this is a nice book to augment one's knitting library, I wouldn't say it's an absolute necessity. It has some nice patterns but none struck me like one I absolutely must have. I liked the book and will keep it but I'm not rushing to knit any specific pattern.

Lovely patterns for hats, tams, gloves and mittens. I found the directions rather difficult to follow as it has been a long time since I knitted gloves, so the first one of the pair has problems, the second one is perfect. Perhaps I should knit three of each pattern? ;-)) Also, the general tips for knitting each type of item are at the beginning of the book instead of with the items, which means a lot of turning back to re-read the beginning. The patterns themselves are mouthwatering, I have had trouble choosing which pattern to start with. I will probably end up knitting all of them! My one gripe is that, for the mittens I am working on at the moment, the thumb pattern is on one page, the back and palm patterns are on another, which means constantly turning the page and remembering which line I am on for each part of the mitten. It would be considerably easier if all patterns were on one page. Minor gripe, though. Also, the patterns are arranged to be knitted from the crown (or tops of the fingers) to the cuff, which my brain doesn't like, so I have to turn the patterns upside down so I can knit from cuff to crown. Again, a minor problem. Otherwise, lovely!
