We have had our adopted daughter since she was 7 months old. Not being able to breastfeed we wanted to give her as many positive dietary items as we could. Of course we could not do a controlled experiment but this has seemed to help her. She is developing well and she has no problem with taking this or the infant DHA Nordic Naturals at all. The developing great is very encouraging because she has a genetic deletion and her mom was malnourished and had no prenatal care. Our daughter was also underfed for the first 6 weeks plus of her life. It seemed she started doing more with vocalbulary and being interested in things after starting the DHA. Would she have anyway? I truly can't say.
After using the infant version I was curious about the Children's version because per ounce this one is vastly better priced. So here is what I found. The label for the infant's DHA lists the amount of DHA and EPA per 4 ml (a serving size is 1 to 4 ml). The Children's DHA lists a serving size as 2.5 ml. When you correct you are getting the same amount of DHA and EPA per serving. But you get 8 ounces here as compared to 2 ounces. For way less than 4 times as much. What you are not getting is the higher levels of D3 in the infant. This one also has a strawberry taste that the infant does not. So if you are buying this for DHA and EPA, this is a much better per ounce price. I wish I had known that sooner.Read more ›
I contacted Nordic Naturals after posting this review and they sent me a free bottle. The free bottle did not smell and the company explained that unauthorized dealers sometimes sell the oxidized product, which is likely what I received.
I accidentaly put this one on the paper tower. And black ink (number and ml signs) came out of it! Who can tell that it wont be in the oil too?
Another concern of mine was the radiation contamination from Fukushima accident. I spent sometime to do homework online on this issue. Finally I was convinced that this Nordic Naturals' product, which is made from Norwegian Arctic Cod, should be safe. Norwegian Arctic cod's habitat is roughly between Greenland and Barents Sea, an isolated area from Pacific waters, which makes it very unlikely to be contaminated. I also checked online for any report about fish radiation contamination. No source points to Norwegian Cod. So, though some seafood is contaminated, this product is relatively safe.
We thought the bottle was too small given the dose you need to give to children per day per weight but it has lasted over 2 months which is just fine for our needs.
Our only concern is the nasty smell of fish left in the bottles and due to an accidental spillage in the kitchen sink. I know you can't have natural supplement and not have the smell without some artificial process but be warned that you'll need a good amount of soap and arm exercise to get this smell of everything that touches the oil. Even worse, your baby might start developing the same smell in its hair over time and skin. Nothing to be concerned, just important to be aware.
Other than that it is a fantastic supplement and I highly recommend it.

Increasing my rating from 3 to 5 stars
The first bottle I purchased was used for a few days (mixed with 1 oz of breast milk) and then it sat untouched. I tossed it after a few months. However, once my baby turned 10 months old, his weight dropped below his curve and our pediatrician recommended I feed him canola oil here and there to increase his calories. I thought that was pretty disgusting so instead I fed him avocado daily for a month and also purchased this baby dha again (about 20 cals per 2 ml dose). My baby loves his baby dha and he will take it straight from the dropper. He increased half a pound in a month and we are going in for his 1 year visit this weekend (he will be 12.5 months). I feel he is heavier so I hope the scale reflects that! He only recently took an interest to solids. I wish it was as easy for him to gain weight as it is for me! I have just finished my 3rd bottle (4th if you count the first one that I tossed), and just placed an order for 2 more bottles. Each one lasts us about a month. It is very difficult to get to the last 10-15 ml of oil in the bottle, I always have to dump it into a little medicine cup and use a syringe to measure the dosage.Read more ›
