How It's Made
Our beloved Bundts are produced with lots of hand touch and care, ensuring that they will last for a lifetime. We've perfected this process over the past seven decades--there is a lot of science behind created the best Bundts on earth! At the die casting facility, molten aluminum at temperatures of over 1200 degrees F is ladled into a chamber where an arm rapidly pushes the liquid aluminum into the die (mold). This takes place in a fraction of a second, and the aluminum solidifies as it hits the cooler mold. The two halves of the mold open up, releasing a very hot but solid aluminum Bundt pan.
The pans have razor sharp 'flash', or left over aluminum, that is protruding from the perimeter of each pan. The flash is trimmed to a rough perimeter before the pans are sent to our main processing facility. There, they undergo a series of secondary finishing processes, including vibratory deburring in a chamber of ceramic pebble, shot blasting with stainless media to 'roughen' the parts, and a perimeter routing in a CNC machine to smooth the edges and trim out handles. Next, they are thoroughly washed, and then sent to coatings to be sprayed and cured with PFOA-free premium nonstick. By the time a Bundt pan has left our factory, it has been touched by nearly two dozen sets of hands, ensure that you're receiving the best Bundt pan in the world.
Nordic Ware was founded in 1946 by a determined wife, Dotty, and her resourceful husband Dave, newly back from the second world war. With only $500 in their pockets, a few good ideas and a desire to create a business of their own, a humble kitchenware company was launched from the basement of their home in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In the beginning, Nordic Ware’s product line was only a handful of items, all of which were specialty Scandinavian ethnic cookware products. But times have changed! 70 years later with a good measure of perseverance added, Nordic Ware is still proudly manufacturing the vast majority of its products in Minneapolis. We’re proud to say that we’re still family-owned and operated, with three generations involved in our business, and each year we add innovative items to our expansive kitchenware line.
70 Years of Innovation
With wife Dotty at his side, Dave Dalquist returned from WWII to start a business. From humble beginnings in a basement, Nordic Ware has become an intentionally distributed kitchenware brand with a variety of product lines, hundreds of products and millions of fans!
Still a family owned and operated in the US, the company is honored to occupy a place in the new Food History exhibit at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. Last fall, Nordic Ware was chosen for the prestigious 2015 Minnesota Manufacturing Award for Sustainability, which firms we work hard to minimize our environmental footprint. Our company moves into 2016 poised for the future, with last year setting an all-time record in sales volume and production efficiency.

I made a practice cake (the included one) the day I got it, and it was perfect. Held my breath, turned the pan upside down, and the cake just popped out, with all the little bees intact. I had a teeeeeny (we're talking 1mm thick) layer of batter stick in a few spots, but I had no shortening, and oiled it pretty sparingly, cause I'm stingy like that. I just didn't really know how to go about it, and erred on the side of less, to avoid a greasy cake top. Is that a thing? Next time I will use shortening, and more of it. Anyway, this cake is going to be perfect for a bee themed party (bee-day?), and I really like the recipe inside - a fresh, creme-less alternative to typical birthday cake, but still very much -cakey, and rich (there's a cup of butter in there, people, it ain't a skinny lemon tart by any stretch of imagination). It will be great with tea, or, as someone else pointed out, with lemon sorbet in the summer.
There are two sad things about this whole affair, one is that this pan makes my Wilton pan look really cheap, sad, and trashy. The other is that now I want more of their pans, in the other designs. Bottom line is, buy it, even if your husband is rolling his eyes on the other end of the couch. Totally worth it.
Alas for me, spacial and monetary constraints prevent me from getting EVERYTHING. Woez.
Still: my husband and I keep bees, so the bee-themed pans are must-haves for us! And this one is great! The detail is excellent, and it makes cakes that are sort of like cupcakes but easier.
I am contemplating how to do a dessert offering that uses both this pan and their wonderful beehive pan (which I also bought).
Practically speaking- apart from being gorgeous in design, these are sturdy and solid pans. The nonstick coating helps the cakes not to stick, and they are heavy enough to moderate heat in the oven.
I haven't tried the included recipe yet; I have a couple of recipes for honey cakes that I like. I have looked hard at the marzipan or fondant bees they use as decoration, and will probably make something similar when I do my hive-and-honeycomb dessert spread.
If I had infinite money and space, I'd buy all these shaped pans. (OK, maybe not the football stadium...) I can't manage that... but I'm delighted with the ones i do purchase!
This pan, in particular, is really lovely. I had been eying it at Williams-Sonoma for a while and then they stopped selling it so when I was ready to purchase it, I was happy to find it for sale here and for less than what is was sold for at Williams-Sonoma.
For a pan that has a lot of intricacies to it, it miraculously releases the cake with all of the honeycombs intact. When I spray it before baking, I take a brush to all of the little creases and divisions just to make sure it all comes out but honestly, it's probably an extra step I can eliminate. This pan is THAT good.
I did make the honey cake recipe that came with the pan once but since then, I have made lemon pound cake in this, though you will have to make two recipes and there will be remainder that you can bake in a mini loaf pan. The best part is you can just glaze this – the honeycombs eliminate the need for icing of any kind. The pieces really do pull off easily.
Every time I see this pan in my cabinet – I feel like I have to make a cake. Memorial Day is coming as well as summer so I will be getting good use out of this. It definitely has a summer feel to it.
Edited to add a pic of the completed birthday cake :)
