I had purchased 3 of the Sistema cookers ... and given two as gifts. When I went to re-order one for me ... it was out of stock ... I should have just pre-ordered and waited but I thought the Nordic Ware name would be a good indication of quality.
Sorry - no. I don't understand how the other reviewers can say that it does not make a mess. I have followed directions, used all portions of the device, taken some out, adjusted the steam valve on top ... nothing changes the fact it makes a mess in the microwave AND collects water in the lid while cooking. You have to be VERY careful when taking it out of the micro or you burn yourself or pour it all over the counter. (there is a depression in the lid around the vent which just gathers water)
The NordicWare cooker also has a burnt rubber smell - from the very start it smelled. I have washed it (extensively) since I use it every day and the smell never goes away. (it does not change if I have the black valve in it or not).
I am re-ordering another Sistema cooker for myself. I can't wait any longer to get a cooker that works better than this one.
Well, I've gone through two since then!! I eat rice regularly, like every day kind of regularly. I'm sure I can still use it, but it just starts to get yellow-ish after about a year and a half of regular every day use... and that's when I would purchase another one.
I've never thought that a microwave rice cooker would compare to streamed rice, but this takes the cake! RICE CAKE! ^__^
I think the magic is in the lid. If you break it apart, it falls into 4 pieces: top vent cap, top of lid, bottom of lid, and then this little piece that hooks onto the vent inside of the lid itself. I didn't find this out until after my few first uses of the cooker, then the lid came apart. I thought I broke it somehow, but then realized it was made to come apart for easier cleaning and all the parts pop back in place perfectly.
Using the long grain jasmine rice I just measure about 2 parts water and 1 part rice... let it run for 9 minutes... sit for 2 minutes... then run again for another 4-5 minutes... take it out and open the lid then immediately give the rice a good stir/toss... and it comes out beautifully!
Then you can store the rice inside of it in the fridge and just reheat it when you're ready for more!
The only negative thing I can think of for this is that if you run it for the straight 13-15 minutes it says to... you'll be left with a huge puddle of rice water to clean up in your microwave. Though, I've found out that I can prevent that by following the same time frames I use to cook the Jasmine rice.

And this is simply putting rice and water in a microwave.
