5.0 out of 5 stars Great cake pan!
By MK on January 13, 2012
I purchased this pan for my daughter's bee themed birthday party. This cake pan is wonderful. It makes it easy to create a cake that looks professional without spending hours on it. The pan is sturdy but not too heavy. The cake inverts very well if you grease and flour the pan properly - a few times I had the bees come out a little flaky if I used too much butter or not enough flour, so I started using Baker's Joy spray with it and have had no problems with the details coming out perfectly. The recipe that comes with the cake tastes like a pound cake and it's very good. It creates more detail on the cake than a box mix does. Although, I found that using the recipe on the label makes 2 halves that do not quite bake up to fill the hives all the way - about 1/2 cup more batter on each half would be good. So I made two batches of the cake batter and filled the pan a little more then used the rest to make small bundt cakes. When I use a box mix I like to use a butter cake mix. I will use two boxes and fill the hive halves and have leftovers for cupcakes. One box mix is not enough to fill both halves! I did not use the recipe on the label for the frosting in the middle, but it is a traditional buttercream that I have since used for other cakes (it's tasty!). I used a canned lemon frosting for convenience and the taste went well with the cake and glaze. The glaze recipe is easy but you have to make it thick so it will not run down the cake and pool too much on the sides. It looks best when it is very thick. I didn't make the royal icing bees with the recipe that came on the label, although it seemed simple enough. Instead I piped candy melt bees onto waxed paper and then attached them with more melts.

The only problem I had was making sure to balance the pan well on the oven rack. Since the bottom of the pan isn't flat, you have to be careful or it will tip. It's easy to get it to stay flat, but you can't just slide it in - you have to pull out the rack and make sure you set it down where the rack supports it in the right places.

Overall I was extremely pleased and my daughter thought it was great. She decided to sprinkle yellow sugar over the glaze and it made the cake look really cute.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cute Cake, but not Practical
By Linda Hazen on July 11, 2015
This cake was easy enough to bake and the mold was very well made, but it really wasn't all that great for serving, as it was impossible to ice the entire thing, leaving many slices without any icing. It was cute, though. I made it for my pup, Izzie Busy Bee's barkday pawty, and got a lot of compliments, on how unique and cute it looked, but would, probably, not make it, again, due to the icing issues. I have no complaints about the actual product, though.
