Tried to use it by itself on one lime, it was effective but slow as hell. Would NOT want to use it like that on a regular basis, since I normally make 3 quarts of lime water (one lime per quart) every 3 days to put in the fridge.
It works with an already-pressed lime though, but I can't say it's particularly "easy" or "fast" contrary to the advertising claims.
FYI: to properly clean it after use, you do need to use some sort of nylon brush, otherwise the pulp sticks a bit to the sharp edges.
Nice that it's made of wood, wonder how long the edges will remain sharp... Oh well, not a bad six buck experiment.
If you are trying to decide between a reamer and a squeezer, they each have their advantages. Squeezers will capture seeds but they are definitely worse at extracting all the juice as they are dependent upon the size of the fruit. Squeezers also tend to errantly squirt the user (at least they do this user). I used to think squeezers required less effort, but this reamer is much easier to use and clean up. If you don't already have a design preference, I'd suggest this reamer for its wear qualities and ability to extract all the juice with less effort.
Overall, both wood and bamboo far outshine the glass reamer in terms of cost, ease of use, fast cleanup, and the ability to get all the juice from a half of a citrus fruit. The mechanical juicer takes up too much space & lacks portability, uses electricity, is SO much harder / time-consuming to clean, and leaches plastic into the juice.
The bamboo version gets all the juice out and is a snap to clean since all it takes is a quick rinse and dries quickly in a dish drainer or dishwasher rack. No need to wash with soap, which is great since who wants soap in her citrus juice?
In researching citrus reamers this bamboo one sounded like it would be the best. Not having tried any of the others I will stick my neck out and say, yes, this is the best!
I really like using bamboo rather than wood and don't trust plastic or metal. The tip is a very sharp point. This means I don't have to use a sharp paring knife to cut through each segment to "open the middle". This gadget is absolutely perfect for limes and the small lemons that are available in our stores.
We recently bought a bag of large size very juicy lemons (how they made it to our town is a mystery). They were almost tangerine size and this little reamer was less than ideal, mostly because too much of the pulp stuck to the bamboo "flutes".
The old fashioned glass juicer is still much better for medium and large size fruits, but I wish I had owned this little bamboo citrus reamer years ago.
For a smallish fruit like a lime or small lemon, it's easier to cut off one end of the fruit and ream the whole thing at once rather than cutting it in half like you would for an orange or grapefruit. I haven't tried it with a larger fruit, but it did an amazing job with the lemons. I don't think any other method could extract any more juice than it did and with a minimum of mess.
Since it is made of bamboo and citrus is acidic, you'll want to hand wash (or at least thoroughly rinse) the reamer immediately after use. Unlike other types of wood, bamboo is naturally anti-bacterial and unlike plastic, it's environmentally friendly.
