First, let me explain what this item is, because I didn't really understand it until I got it. It is NOT like a pepper mill, where you fill up the outside and it feeds into the grinder and out the bottom. The box explains that the interior of the grinder can be used to store the spices, but they don't feed the grinder. To load the grinder, you have to remove the top, fill a small interior cylinder about 2/3 of the way, then put the top back on. At that point, cranking the handle turns the spices against the sharp slots in the bottom of the grinder, and ground spices fall through the slots.

Because the slots are fairly wide, I would say black peppercorns are about the smallest seed you could use with decent results. I bought it to use for grinding allspice, which are about pea-size, and it works great for that. Nutmeg, which are even bigger, would be perfect. Anything soft, like ginger, or small, like rosemary, it just isn't designed for. I bought this, and will keep it, because the regular peppermills I have tried just can't handle allspice - the seeds seem to be just too big to feed well. Now that I have it, I'm going to have to get some whole nutmegs. It would be interesting to try nuts and broken cinnamon sticks, as well.

The only issue I see so far is that I've been having a bit of trouble getting the lid seated firmly all the way around, but that may be because I filled the grind tube fairly high, so it's hard to push down firmly and evenly enough to turn the lid so all the plastic tabs catch. If this item fails, I suspect that those plastic tabs on the lid will be the reason.

Overall this grinder works as intended. I use the grinder for nutmeg, and it works great to both grind and store nutmeg. The one issue that I have is that the bottom of the grinder is open, which means that if the handle is moved inadvertently, the grinder leaves grinds on any surface the grinder is placed on. A bottom lid would be welcome in my opinion.

No matter what I put in this, it turns out chunky. I tried cinnamon sticks, and nutmeg. This grinder could not produce a fine, or even medium grind. I could have taken the spice and hit it with a hammer in a baggie and gotten the same effect.

I bought the spice grinder to grind cardamom seeds but they just fell through it unground. Then I tried it to grind ginger. That didn't work at all. Whole black pepper resulted in a very coarse grind. Maybe the spice grinder works for nutmeg. I don't know because I don't like nutmeg. It's cute, but if it doesn't work, it's a waste of space and money.

This little grinder is great ! I read a couple of other reviews before buying. Yes
it is a little difficult to open @ first. I loaded one nutmeg into the grinding area
and am storing other nuts inside the compartments. The size of the grounds is not as
fine as I would like for coffee but works great when added into ground coffee for brewing
and is fine enough for baking. It Is open on the bottem, so grounds can fall through
so I keep it is a bag. Glad I made this purchase.

In an attempt to add depth to our cooking we bought this to use for grinding spices. Contrary to how it looks it holds only one nutmeg at a time. The teeth inside are not aggressive enough to do a whole nutmeg either as the nutmeg became smooth and stopped grinding fairly quickly. It will probably go to Goodwill.

It really works great in grinding down spices to a dustlike texture which is necessary when putting dry rubs on meats for barbecuing.

I am glad I tried this spice grinder first and I did because the price was right. However, the grinding "pestle" isn't solid; it has a hollow center. This prevents the spices from being pressed evenly and the smaller chunks get caught in this hollow center. But, for the money I paid, I am easily getting past that issue by moving those chunks to the side.

Overall it was a very adequate utensil for the money. I will probably invest in a better one but will keep this one as well. This purchase helped me realize what to look for on the next improved spice grinder I search to purchase.
