Good quality, a few minor issues

There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
Once upon a time, there was a CEO of a major company and/or a former US President (I heard this story a long time ago and forget which it was), whose personal chef made the absolute best hamburgers. It was an inside joke between them where the CEO would repeatedly ask how the chef made such great-tasting burgers. The chef's reply was always the same, that a great cook never divulges his secrets.
After so long of this, the guy eventually jokes that he'll fire the guy if he doesn't fess up his method. The chef obliges and takes him into the kitchen. There, he proceeds to take a T-Bone steak, cut the meat from the bone and throw the meat into a grinder. He forms a burger and grills it.
The secret to a great burger, or so the story goes, is in using fresh, high quality steak.
Ever since that story, I was enraptured to buy a grinder and try this for myself. Woe was me when I saw even cheap consumer-grade grinders were $100.
So. Imagine my surprise a few years later when I typed in "meat grinder" into Amazon's search and found this $20 masterpiece.
At first I was skeptical, due to the price, but the reviews forced my hand. And I bought it. Here's my review:
PROS:
The price (was) right. It jumped $7 to $27 a few days after I purchased it.
The unit is solidly built and tears down to easy-to-clean parts. It is simple in operation and assembly and includes lots of additional (pasta) attachments.
It ground my de-boned short ribs and sirloin strip with ease.
The suction cup works great on my countertop.
The manual says don't clean in a dishwasher. Another reviewer says he does it with success. I barely rinsed mine after dis-assembly, threw it in the dishwasher and out it came perfectly clean and spotless. One thing I may note is that the clear plastic hopper may discolor with time using this method. The small pieces must be placed in an escape-proof tray, as well.
Free shipping, no sales tax and an unbeatable return policy (not that I'd need to use it with this product).
CONS:
None that I can really think of. It may be too small for some people, but for my needs it works great!
The unit is all plastic except for the blades and part of the handle. That may turn off some people, but not me.
OTHER & CONCLUSION:
I had never ground meat before. I was highly impressed with the results although it appears I need to work on meat selection and/or seasoning to master that "perfect burger."
The naysayers that gave this one star or less don't know what they're doing. This grinder works great for consumer use. They had to have been doing something wrong.
Pros: no motor to burn out. I tried a Waring Pro at Bed Bath and Beyond that worked once and then the motor jammed and started to smoke! I wanted a hand crank anyway because who needs another plug in appliance anyway! (no, i dont have a Kitchen Aid). The suction grip worked perfect and strong on my granite tile counter. I gound about 2lbs of chuck pefectly fine. The advantage of mostly plastic parts is that the only parts you have to worry about rusting is the blade and extruder tips. just oil them before storing like you would your cast iron. The unit dissasembles completely for easy easy cleaning. making your own ground beef is so frickn easy! I will never buy ground beef again. (E-coli, bone chips, nose cartilege, eyeballs, ears, cheek, etc are just some of the things you get)
Tips: i see someone mentions having blood dripping everywhere. What? ok you need to know is that you are supposed to grind your meat cubes partially frozen. not thawed and not completely frozen. you wont have any blood anywhere and your wont jam your unit. Also someone mentioned melting a piece. I dont see how that can happen unless your were grinding with a bionic arm or trying to grind and force meat that was too frozen. It bugs me to see reviews from people who think you just throw meat in this and grind. it has to be cut into grindable pieces and semi-frozen. Also, if you want burgers or meatloaf you will need meat with fat. unless you're going to add something to your recipe you need fat to bind the patties or loaves together. i used chuck steak with a fair but not a lot of fat but that wasnt enough. my burgers could have used more juice and crumbled a bit and i noticed there was very little fat that dipped off. so i guess the chuck i used probably made what was a 90% lean ground beef. BTW, it was tasted fantastic. although it was seasoning really, but at least i know it was 100% chuck and not cheek!
Cons: none so far. i will update my review as i use this more often but it seems pretty good to me. I will try pasta next as well.
1. The meat has to be slice into fairly thin strips in order to get fed through.
2. If the meat had any amount of fat, it was guaranteed to get stuck in the blades and moving parts causing everything to be jammed and meat to come back out the opposite direction.
3. When you actually were able to get a slice of meat through, the handle would be difficult to turn.
4. The bottom of the unit does not suction well to the countertop so you must use one hand to hold down the unit while using the other to turn.
5. The handle is longer than the unit so the unit must be placed at the edge of the counter. However the handle doesn't stick far enough out from the unit so it makes it difficult to find that sweet spot where you can turn the handle
comfortably without having the unit hang halfway over the edge.
All in all I tried to grind about one pound of meat in two tries and had to take the contraption apart to clear jams about fifteen times. Not worth the time and effort. Maybe it works well for pasta. Who knows. But now I'm willing to shell out the money to buy a kitchen aid because I've used my friend's many times and it was fast and easy!!!
