This product is legal but inappropriate. Do you want to go green? Get rid of plastics. (If you don't want to stop using the bags you have left, at least recycle them, don't put them in your compost.)
All of our holiday composting was left for us on the curb by our recyclers/waste folks.
Solution = to empty the contents into REAL biodegradable bags and carry on.
The up side to these bags is that they are sturdy and that they are a perfect fit for the counter-top compost pail. The down side is that I guess they're intended to be thrown in the trash.
Here is a quote from the standards page: "To date, our scientists have been unsuccessful in making the point at these standards organizations that the metrics of these standards are inconsistent with the stated objective – to ensure that plastics entering managed compost facilities biodegrade “at a rate comparable to known compostable materials.”
At present, although EPI’s specially designed TDPA® modified plastic bags are used successfully in some managed industrial composting operations, they do not meet the requirement of the compostable plastics standards relating to the rate of biodegradation in a compost environment and as such, EPI does not claim compostability for its products"
It would be ok if they were forthright with what their product is, but they are greenwashing and trying to make people believe they are selling a product that is compostable when it hasn't been certified.
And so, while I don't mind emptying the compost liner into the compost bin, and then throwing the used liner into the garbage, I do feel that it was a totally unnecessary, confusing, and inaccurate claim that these liners are "Recyclable" (almost any plastic is recyclable). Further, these liners aren't even marked with a Recycling Placard with the number containing the type of plastic. Since they are missing that number, most likely they would go into the garbage even if you sent them to your recycling center.
The product itself, as a non-reusable liner for your compost pail, works perfectly, does not leak, and fits the pail exactly. In that it would deserve a 5-Star rating. Since it is marketed as "Recyclable and Reusable" I would say that it only achieves a rating of 3-Star in meeting those claims.
