About the Author

Professor Ron Dart has taught in the Department of Political Science, Philosophy and Religious Studies at the University of the Fraser Valley, Abbotsford, British Columbia, since 1990. He was on staff with Amnesty International in the 1980s. He is the political science advisor to the Stephen Leacock Home and Museum, and serves on the boards of the Thomas Merton Society of Canada and the Society of Archbishop Secker. He has published more than thirty books, served as an editor for The Anglican Catholic, The Friend: The High Tory Review and Anglican Tradition journals and has contributed poems, articles and reviews to a wide range of publications in both North America and the United Kingdom. Ron Dart is a leading authority on the North American High-Red Tory religio-political tradition.

Ron Dart, the embodied steward of George Grant's legacy - review by Bradley Jersak

Ron Dart, though already profound and prolific in this field, has released his magnum opus on The North American High Tory Tradition (American Anglican Press, 2016). This weighty work of politics, philosophy, literature and theology surely cements Ron's place as the leading High Tory scholar in Canada, if not the world. He has a unique ability to see to the heart of the matter and to transcend the poverty of the left-right spectrum. His critique of American modern liberal thought would be devastating, but Dart nevertheless disappoints extremists (as did Grant before him) by nuancing nearly any debate beyond crass reactivism.

Perhaps Ron's greatest critical faculty is expressed when he compares various thinkers and movements. In this collection of essays, he contrasts Canadian toryism with American conservatism; Noam Chomsky with Robin Mathews; Ginsberg with Grant; Creighton with Forsey; Leacock with Eliot; and even Anglicanism with Orthodoxy. This sort of flint-on-stone approach produces sparks of insight that I've not seen elsewhere. I would regard Dart's work as a richer blend than, for example, Phillip Blond's popular Red Tory analysis on the UK front. This achievement is magnified by Dart's embodied stewardship of the George Grant legacy. It marks this particular work as the decisive text on The North American High Tory Tradition.

A Politics Worth Rediscovering

"The North American High Tory Tradition" resists easy categorization: part history, part political philosophy, part theology, part Canadiana, it is a sweeping account of the rise and decline of a robust and noble politics and a clarion call to rediscover and reconsider this tradition in light of our current political circumstances. Dart's writing is lively, engaging, and thoughtful and he moves easily between scholarly subjects as he meticulously traces the high Tory tradition from its religious and historical roots to its embodiment in luminous (and luminary) thinkers like George Grant, C.S. Lewis and Stephen Leacock. Perhaps the great contribution of this book is Dart's unflinching commitment to situate the high Tory tradition in its proper Anglican religious context, never shying away from acknowledging the deep and abiding connections between the political and the religious.

The Canadian Tory Tradition Clarified

Author Ron Dart has written a valuable book clarifying the essence of the classical High Tory political tradition (Red Tory) in in Canada, distinguishing it from the dominant Blue Tory form it has taken today under the influences of American liberalism and Hegelian thought. The author establishes a normative grounding for political action sorely lacking in modern political thought and practice. The book contains personal anecdotes, in-depth political philosophical analysis, and exhaustive bibliographic resources. Whether you are a politician, political philosophy professor, student, or voter, this is a must-read book, for Canadians especially, but as well for all North Americans, to help (re)discover an almost extinguished way of political thought, for guidance in establishing the commonweal of the nation in these turbulent times.

A forgotten tradition brought to the forefront

The North American High Tory Tradition is Prof. Ron Dart's latest contribution to an area of Canadian history that has been much neglected. Despite the foundational roles in Canada of the Loyalist and High Tory traditions, they receive little attention in Canadian political life or in the education system. As a result, many Canadians will learn about the radical agitator William Lyon Mackenzie, but not about Bishop John Strachan, the defender of the Established Church and pillar of the Family Compact, whose work was shaped by his negotiating role in the War of 1812.

University students in particular are encouraged to read this work. Dart details the Canadian High Tory critique of American Liberalism, done by Stephen Leacock on economic grounds and George Grant on philosophical and religious ones. Yet, the average student of philosophy or political science in Canada will be hard-pressed to find their studies directly linked to the traditions of Canada's own founding.

Dart's approach is holistic and cohesive, and he sees the High Tory tradition as inextricably linked to the Anglican faith, the roots of which are not with King Henry VIII, but rather with the very first missionaries to the British Isles. Regardless of the reader's own religious background, this context is fundamental to understanding why those who built Canada championed devotion to God, Crown, and country. As the work details, this tradition links Canadian High Tories with fellow travelers abroad. Readers will learn about the ties between Stephen Leacock and T. S. Eliot, as well as George Grant and C. S. Lewis.

One sincerely hopes that this book will spark imaginations, and that more than a few readers will take up the task of rediscovering and revitalizing what too many of us have forgotten.

A Way Forward In Looking Back In Critical Reflection

At first glance, this book seems like yet another carbon-copy re-iteration of Dart's Red/High Tory thesis. However, upon engaging the text, one finds that this is not the case. Firstly, the more literary element of High/Red Toryism (Livesay, Fiamengo, Acorn, etc.) has been left out to allow, one would assume, a more focused political and theological discussion. Secondly, Dart has dug deeper in each and every essay, introducing new details not found in the previous three books, which serve to broaden the reader's understanding.

This is more than an appeal to North Americans to remember what was forgotten, however. The road ahead is no easy task for those heeding Dart's call to re-think the vita activa and re-affirm the vita contemplativa. The intentional adoption of a worldview so diametrically opposed to the present ascendancy of liberalism in all its forms will not survive half-measures. At its darkest, it is the death of ego, the dark night of the soul, the total re-examination of the meaning of self/Self. At its brightest, it is true liberation, true freedom, true divinization, true humanity.
