The P-51 Mustang is one of the greatest warplanes of all time. Developed as a private venture, it was seized upon by the British as the answer to their shortage of fighter aircraft in the early months of World War Two. Early Allison-engined Mustangs lacked performance at high altitude, but the great promise of the airframe was clear, and when fitted with the Rolls-Royce Merlin the Mustang became one of the best pistoned-engined fighters ever built. Development and Operational History of the P-51

Malcom Lowe has written a comprehensive, capable operational and developmental history of the P-51 Mustang. About 1/2 of the book covers the history of getting the Mustang into production – from design to flight and subsequent modifications over the years which include a nice review of the P-82 Twin Mustang. While not a nuts and bolts review, it does provide good coverage of the ups and downs of making the P-51 the ultimate long range fighter escort of WW2. The operational history sheds light on which unit fought where with which variant, a format consistent with Crowood Aviation series (I have six others in the series).

I would have rated this higher but for several tendencies of author Lowe. The first is repetition. You find the same sentences in the captions, sometimes in the same paragraphs and scattered throughout the book. While I agree that fielding of the Mustang was delayed by US bureaucracy, does the reader need to be reminded of this six or seven times? Lowe also is very strident in his claim that he is the one myth busting misconceptions about the P-51. Granted, the Mustang has had enormous press since WW2, much of it incorrect. But not all of it and certainly, the sources he cites that go back as far as 1980 (Jeff Ethel's book), correct these 'myths'.

Speaking of sources, the bibliography is all of secondary sources and websites. The author states and I am convinced he has read primary sources, but a distinguishing factor of good vs excellent histories are the citing of the sources. I'm sure the websites referred to are good, but if so good, do we need a book at all or should we just look on line?

Of course we need the book – I prefer books and have collected them for over 40 years. I agree with author Lowe's conclusions, but prefer authors to state facts, give sources to back up opinions and not exaggerate their place in furthering the history of a particular subject. Having said all of that, this is still a good, single source book for someone who wants the history of the creation and operation of this plane.

Excellent book. Has many photographs that to not commonly appear in P-51 specific works. Nice for format size, big but not full "coffee table" dimensions.

The Ultimate Mustang Book

For anyone who loves the P-51 Mustang, books abound with history and specifications and war records. But what we have here is the most recent research, an up-to-date compilation of fighter groups, post-war activities, and current users of arguably the greatest warbird ever created. This book will fit nicely in a bookshelf along with a definitive history of the Spitfire, for the two warplanes are bound at the hip by Merlin. This book is a MUST for the modeler and the collector, and even for the serious researcher. We are lucky to have this book available to us. For the beginner collector, this book might be a stretch, even a bit boring with all the details. For the general reader, the book will require involvement. But for the other Mustang-lovers, this is THE book to have.

Comprehensive if Dry History of the P-51!

Malcolm Lowe's NORTH AMERICAN P-51 MUSTANG is one of the best technical/operational histories of the war-winning Mustang I've come across. Published in 2009 by Crowood Press, it may be THE definitive nuts-and-bolts guide to that war-winning fighter.

Though the Mustang story has been related many times in previous books, NORTH AMERICAN P-51 MUSTANG benefits from Lowe's lengthy research into its creation and development. He recounts the Mustang story in a lengthy, fact-filled style that not only details the P-51's life and times but also debunks many myths and legends that have cropped up about the Mustang. Lowe's book runs to 272 pages, space being equally devoted to the P-51's technical development, combat exploits, usage by a variety of air forces including the Luftwaffe(!), postwar service, Korean combats and its later career as an air racer and warbird. The main text is bolstered by various sidebars on North American Aviation, the Packard and Merlin engines, the "original" Pioneer Mustang Group, unsung P-51 heroes, Mustang MoH winners, etc.

In terms of illustrations, NORTH AMERICAN P-51 MUSTANG is a treasure trove. It contains hundreds of b&w and color photographs along with diagrams, three-views, exploded views and detail illustrations. Many of the pix will be familiar to Mustang devotees but having all those great illustrations under one cover is a plus. Profiles of the major models would have been nice but that might have been cost-prohibitive.

Having said all that, Lowe's book is an awfully dry read. Unlike other Crowood Aviation Series titles, NORTH AMERICAN P-51 MUSTANG is utterly lacking in first-person reminiscences. Such accounts are not only invaluable in putting a human face on the P-51's history but also add spice to the narrative. In summarizing NORTH AMERICAN P-51 MUSTANG, I'd have to say: Comprehensive, yes; Well-researched, yes; Well-illustrated, yes; Exciting, no.

In any case, air combat buffs will want to check out Lowe's book. Though it's priced at $49.95, it's certainly worth it. Although I found it dry I gave it five stars; it's an impressive piece of work. Others may decide it's perfectly fine as is, thank you very much. Recommended.
