Enjoy a good ghost story or legend? Then this is the book for you. Especially if you also have an interest in North Carolina. North Carolina Ghosts & Legends, as the title indicates, covers many old ghost stories and legends from the mountains to the coast. Stories include "The Ghost Comes for Blackbeard", "The Unearthly Music of Roan Mountain", "The Mysterious Hoofprints at Bath", "The Little Red Man", "Devil's Tramping Ground" and "The Battle of the Dead".
I found the stories to be very interesting. Nancy Roberts' writing style draws you in and makes you feel like you're there. Many chapters have pictures, some of which have apparitions added by a photographer...

I enjoyed this book. Each chapter is just a few pages, perfect for dipping in for a moment or so. Some tales I had heard, but others were totally new to me.

Contents:
The Ghost Comes for Blackbeard, Ocracoke
The General's Ghost, For Fisher
The Whaler's Return, Shackleford Banks
The Unearthly Music of Roan Mountain
Lifesaver of the Outer Banks
The Lovely Apparition, near High Point
Run of the Ghost Train, Warsaw
The Mysterious Hoofprints at Bath
The Fairy Cross, western North Carolina mountains
Music by the Ghost Organ, Kadesh
Bummer's End, Smithfield
The Little Red Man, Old Salem
The Thing at the Bridge, Smithfield
Devil's Tramping Ground, Siler City
The Light at Maco Station, Wilmington
Dromgoole, Chapel Hill
Ghost of the Old Mine, Gold Hill
The Battle of the Dead, Bentonville
The Ghost on the Stairs, Fayetteville

This book is well worth reading if you like gentle horror or ghost stories. Nothing is too scary and all are well told.

If you enjoy paranormal stories or North Carolina legends and history, then I think you would enjoy this book.

Nancy Roberts is a great storyteller, usually putting the reader into the story through the eyes of its participants. While her normal eye for detail is there, I found many of the stories to be a bit below her usual standard. Granted, her classic "Ghosts of the Carolinas" is a tough act to follow, but I'd still have to recommend that book over this one.
