So, I am in no way an expert at spotting fakes, but this has been my favorite jacket for a few years now, and I own 3. I received my jacket from "right-price", and I should have paid more attention that it was not coming from Amazon proper. I bought the jacket to replace a color I had recently lost. The jacket showed up shoved (not folded) in a bag stamped "ready to ship." The jacket had no tags on it whatsoever, and felt considerably lighter than the other two I had. The material was thinner. I put the jacket on, and it was cut way too wide in the back, and felt nothing like the fit of the other two I have. I was surprised, having paid the full $159, that i would receive a possible fake. I ended up doing some research, and ended up purchasing from the actual TNF website (why not, I was paying full price). The second I touched the material and felt the weight of the jacket I knew I was right, and returned the "right-price" jacket. This is not a knock on Amazon, they are still by far my favorite online retailer...just a word of caution to potential buyers...if you have never had one of these jackets, it is worth your time to actually feel what a real one feels like (at a store or a friends jacket) before you purchase online.

For those buying a replacement: The Old version I purchased around 2010 ran small. I am 6' and 180lbs and the old XL fit me well. I ordered an XL again and it is a bit bigger, but still works okay. The jacket is great.

This was a Christmas gift for my husband after he kept hinting about a North Face jacket this past year. He loves black, wanted a jacket where our two dog's hair wouldn't always be all over it and that would be warm in all weather while not being bulky.

This jacket fit the bill. As soon as he pulled it out of the package, he was beaming from ear to ear. He put it on and didn't take it off until of course it made him way too hot. This is now his most favorite jacket. Best of all he says dog hair doesn't stick to it at all!

So far this seems to be the perfect light- to mid-weight jacket that will serve 90% my needs in Texas from fall to spring. I'll update this review later after I've worn it more but I wanted to chime in on sizing, since I know that's a nagging question. Here goes:

I'm 5'8", 175#, 32" waist with a reasonably athletic build. I'm in size hell in shirts...most Mediums look like I'm trying too hard and some/most Larges look baggy and sloppy. All that said, the Large size in this jacket fits great. I tried a medium on in a store and it was immediately too tight in the shoulders and chest. XL draped over me and Large was juuuuuuust right. If anything the large might be just a touch big but for layering that's what you want, and a medium was absolutely not an option. I've also read a lot of comments about the sleeves being too long...by no means do I have long arms at 5'8" and the sleeves on the L seem perfect.

Hope this helps. Awesome jacket to be sure.

The arms of the jacket are pretty snug, and I'm not exactly a bodybuilder. I would still give this 5 stars if they had used a more slippery material inside the sleeves, but with the existing material it's a bit of a pain to put it on over long-sleeve shirts (you can't just slip it on, it actually takes some effort). The materials they used are high quality though, so that's not a problem, and the craftsmanship is very good. The black part (top and sleeves) is a smooth material, and the bottom half (the "heather" part) is very slightly textured.

Pro-tip: Before you wear this for the first time, turn it inside out (including the sleeves), and go nuts with a lint roller. I wore this to work for the first time, and when I took it off at my desk my shirt was covered in lint (luckily I keep a lint roller in my drawer). When I got home, I went through at least 5 lint roller sheets on the inside of the jacket until it wasn't noticeable anymore.

I'm 6'1 and 190 lbs. I have a number of North Face jackets and just as it is for those ones, the Apex Bionic in Large fits me perfectly. I really like the color of it. Looks great with khakis, jeans, or even dress slacks. The soft-shell material is warm enough to wear on days in the 40's and provides very good wind protection. As someone who lives and works in downtown Chicago, wind protection is very important!
The material also is decent for water-repelling. Might not want to get stuck in a torrential downpour (especially since this doesn't have a hood), but in a light rain you'll be fine.
Two things I am not crazy about (but can live with) is that the material inside is very clingy. What I mean is, if you're wearing a long sleeved shirt, the sleeve gets dragged up your arm when you put the jacket on. Not the end of the world, but a bit of an annoyance. The second thing is the velcro on the cuffs. It is a rubber strap that comes across and doesn't necessarily stay well stuck when you try to make the cuff a little snugger. Again, not a deal-breaker, but the sleeves are already kinda long and many people will want to make the cuff openings a bit tighter so that your hands aren't up the sleeve.
Despite these couple minor gripes, and the somewhat high cost, I am still really pleased with this purchase. The jacket looks great and is really versatile. I'm sure it won't be my last.
