During the 1960s and early 1970s, northern Arizona played a critical role in fulfilling President Kennedy's bold challenge of sending humans to the moon. From the rocky depths of the Grand Canyon to lofty cosmic views from Flagstaff's dark skies, northern Arizona was ideal for activities ranging from moon buggy testing and geology training to lunar mapping and mission simulation. Every astronaut who walked on the moon, from Neil Armstrong to Gene Cernan, prepared for his journey in northern Arizona, and all used maps created by Flagstaff artists to navigate their way around the lunar surface. This book captures the spirit of these pioneers with stunning images from NASA, the US Geological Survey, and others.

More History from the Mid-Atlantic Captured here in over 250 vintage images is the human drama of survival and coexistence in the canyon, from the native tribes who struggled with life on the rim, to the pioneers who came to foster and manipulate the early tourist industry. The diverse people of the Hopi, whose name means "the peaceful ones," are today united on the Hopi Reservation, which is composed of 12 villages on more than 2,500 square miles in northeastern Arizona. An adventure still awaits the traveler today who takes the time to exit I-40 and leave the franchised blandness behind. This book explores how the seeds of music so deeply planted in the early days continue to produce great musicians and how the influences of those icons will vibrate throughout future international generations. November 22, 1963, is a date that will forever live in the hearts of those who were witness to the assassination of Pres. John F. Kennedy in Dealey Plaza. Surprisingly, the majority of sites associated with events of that day still stand. The Texas Rangers. The words evoke exciting images of daring, courage, high adventure.

Interesting and very visual story of the preparation for the moon landing of 50 years ago. For those wanting the back story of how astronauts trained for the moon walks, read this brief, but informationn-filled book.

Nearly 50 years after the Apollo moon landings, after all the books written about it, you might imagine that nothing new could be said about it. But astronomy historians Kevin Schindler and William Sheehan have given us a fascinating look at a mostly unknown chapter of the story. The astronauts did some of their most important geology training in the varied and famous landscapes of northern Arizona, at Meteor Crater, at the Grand Canyon, at Sunset Crater National Monument, at an artificial moonscape blasted out of a lava field, and at Lowell Observatory. At first the astronauts were bored with learning geology, until their tutors decided to take them for a two-day hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, which got them hooked on geology. Schindler and Sheehan have dug up some very rare (indeed, unknown) photos that show the astronauts figuring out everything they would need to know on the moon.

This book is a must for any Apollo history enthusiast.
