Buyer Beware: Kits Incomplete and Technical Guidance Unsound
January 18, 2016
I contacted Northern Brewer's customer service to let them know they neglected to include a small hose and two clamps which are advertised as part of the kit on their website (parts connecting the false bottom to the ball valve). Their video for kit assembly shows these parts in the kit and references them in the assembly process -- "insert the included tubing" and "insert the provided clamps". However, Northern Brewer responded: "We don't usually include the hose clamps as they are tended to not be needed" and, in the next sentence, encouraged me to order those parts from their website separately (after I just spent $275 for the complete kit). Aside from the false advertising and attempt to nickel and dime their customers, their advice to forego the hose clamps is unsound. I know this because I tried that shortcut and the un-clamped tubing became disconnected in the mash tun, creating a huge mess to fix mid-mash (I had to completely empty the mash-tun), and the disruption to the mash schedule has potentially ruined my batch (we'll see how it turns out). Based on this experience, I am returning the entire kit and warning other buyers to beware the advertising as well as the technical advice.
