Kira studies polar bears and their migration habits, loves her job and is good at it. The research station where she works offers her a wonderful place to 'hide out' after a savage attack in her college days left her disillusioned about life and love.
Lukas leads a simple life running a wildlife tour company and caring for his special needs daughter, Sophie. He dated Kira in college, but hasn't seen her since the night he proposed and she ran away with no explanation.
Now, they are thrown together again when Kira's brother, also Lukas' best friend, is killed in an accident that may not be an accident. Attacks on Kira compel Lukas to protect her, but can he keep her safe when their very lives are threatened? And what to do about those old feelings that keep revealing themselves in new ways that are impossible to ignore?
This novel will live on in your thoughts long after that last page gets turned. You may even learn a few things about polar bears that will surprise you! I am eagerly anticipating Ms. Wood's next novel, certain it will be as thrilling and romantic as Northern Deception.
"Northern Deception" had that same effect! The cold, the descriptions of the frozen landscape, the tundra, the possibility of nature killing you at any moment for being careless...all these dangers made "Northern Deception" one high stakes suspense adventure,
Danger is everywhere. In the endless white rolling landscape polar bears can appear instantly out of 'nowhere' from dips similar to buffalo wallows on the U.S. parries. Moreover, the polar bears migrate through the town! At this point they are hungry! Very hungry. Beside the humans are a lot closer than the seals out in the arctic waters.
I must I admit I wanted to read another book like "Ice". I also wanted a story that takes place in Canada. I also wanted it to be a true romance which is very hard to write when people are together for only a short time as in a suspense where the major objective is to just survive.
Fortunately, this is a love story with a past. Kira and Lukas once were in love some years before when Kira called it off without any explanation. Its their survival crisis that gets them back together. With constant death a reality at every turn, the suspense speeds the story along so fast I was in fear of tearing the pages out.
I just loved every page of this story. The adventure never lets up and the romance is tested to the limit. I believe this couple will find a love that will last forever.
I might add that the descriptions in this story are poetic and beautiful and they have the importance of being a major character in the scheme of things. I love this because it was so important to the total reading enjoyment.
I've wanted to read a story like this for the past 50 years so I may like it more than the average bear.
If you have been looking for an exciting and different experience in a genuine romance, "Northern Deception," should deliver with impact.
It took me about 30 seconds to buy this book after learning about it! There was no doubt in my mind and I was right.
Trying to make sense of her life again after the questionable death of her brother, polar bear scientist Kira Summers returns to northern Canada in order to continue her research. It becomes apparent that whoever killed her sibling has struck a vendetta against her as well, for shortly after arriving back at the Arctic Science Research Centre, she narrowly escapes a vicious attempt on her life. Adding to her confusion is the reappearance of her first love, Lukas Tanner, who along with his young daughter, is living just miles away from Kira's research laboratory.
The chase is on . . . .to find answers and to discover just who is behind a ten million dollar "northern deception"! Can Kira and Lucas untangle their hearts at the same time?
I read this book over a couple days, which is rare for me as I tend to take my time. The action hits quickly and doesn't really let up until the final chapter with a couple twists I didn't see coming. While a couple characters' motivations could've been fleshed out a little more, I found this book to be exactly what I was looking for in a quick summer read (no irony intended). The romance is realistic. The characters, especially little Sophie, are endearing and likeable and the plot was enough to keep me turning the pages. What else can you ask for in a summer read that takes place in the frozen Canadian tundra?
