I was quiet excited about going into this book. I've been reading the same kind of books lately and wanted a change.
This book was a fantastic change for me. I loved every second of it.
The characters are well developed and I connected with them straight away. Even the secondary characters are easy to connect with and there's quite a few of them.
The storyline was gripping and I wanted to keep reading to find out what happened.

Tabitha is a normal teenage girl, she loves music, dance and to hang out with her friends. Accept lately she hasn't been doing that a lot. She lives with her Nana, but she has grown sick, so now Tabitha only goes out when needed.
But one day she meets Nathan. She feels she needs to keep her distance but at the same time, she's attracted to him. She feels this pull towards him that she can't explain, but he can!
It was a really gripping story, it pulled me in from the start, and after finishing it, I am left hanging, wanting more. I'm not sure when the next book is out. I hope soon!

Original review posted on Lily Loves Indie as part of a blog tour and an ARC copy was received -

I said it to start this review, but seriously, it needs saying again, this is quite simply, one of THE best books I have read this year (and that statement packs a punch given there are only 3 days left in this year!) and it really isn’t an overstatement, promise! I’ll have to ask you to bear with me as I will probably waffle slightly as I gush with merriment at how wonderful this book is, and how fantastic this author is at drawing you into the tale.

A story of love, strange worlds and power struggles between good and evil. Tabitha is born into a struggle and a new world that has been hidden from her for her whole life, just so she can be kept safe. Nathan is her protector, his love for her pure and totally sincere. The other characters are double agents, guardians of Tabitha, there to ensure safe passage to the Northern Gate and her home land, when the time comes.

So, having started off with how great I found this book, I suppose I really should elaborate further on my 5 star rating! Firstly, one of the characters, Nyleh/Helen, is portrayed as having dementia, or other similar memory trouble. Now, this might seem like a really tiny thing to pick up on, but bear with me on this, it was fantastically written. I know several individuals who have suffered with these kinds of problems and Clarke had it spot on throughout. The ‘good days’ and ‘bad days’, the confusion, the way it tires those closest to them more than the individual suffering. It was all perfect, and that made me understand and engage so much more in the book because it was clear it was well thought of and accurate.

I am completely in love with this book! The cover is what truly caught me....I love the tree and the's just incredible. This is the third book I read by J.C. Clarke and I absolutely loved it. I mean...I loved it enough to go stalk the author for the next book, so that says something, right?

The Northern Gate is the story of Tabitha getting her wings. She's an ordinary girl living in an ordinary village....or so she thinks. As her Nana is passing from one world to the next, Tabitha finds herself enthralled by the strange but HOT man that keeps turning up.

Natanael has been charged with Tabitha's protection. As her soul's mate, he knows more than he can tell her about the dark forces swirling down on them.

The characters are refreshing in their honesty - this isn't one of those novels where they meet and fall passionately in love and it's happily ever after. Tabitha definitely makes Natanael work for it. She's an independent, equal and wants everyone to know it.

This book is written in an incredibly beautiful style and I honestly believe that J.C. Clarke was MEANT to write this style. It's absolutely wonderful. I like the mythology that is weaved in and the magic isn't so over the top that it is unbelievable. I'm so excited for the next book!

I found myself not wanting to put this book down! To me it was a very fast read and highly enjoyable. The way that she developed the main characters was really good. There was a mixture of emotions, ranging from happy to sad.

Nathan one of the characters is a very mysterious man. He is trying to fulfill destiny and complete the path that fate has laid out for him. He cant do that without the help of Tabitha. Tabitha is his soul mate, his better half. They are destined to be together from the beginning of time. They embark on a trip full of ups, downs and excitement. The end of the book will leave you wanting more. I personally can't wait for the next book in the series to come out!
