The other character we find ourselves riding alongside is a disturbed math teacher that has a fascination with fire. We swing in between these two stories as each struggles to survive. The novel is well written and maintains a tense pace that has the reader flipping pages. How do the parents of Jay make it with their depleting fuel and their missing son? Not to mention, while wounded and limping from one catastrophic encounter to another.
The parents are likeable as we’re privy to their pleasant banter and the son is a believable kid struggling to get back to his parents in a dangerous adult world. We end up cheering as both he and his Mom and Dad stay alive for one more day. It’s an edge of the seat kind of read that I recommend with a five star review.
Korpela pulls us through the woods and small towns of the upper northeast territories and gives a close and gripping view of civilization as it slowly deteriorates and man’s worst inclinations and fears rise with a viscous sneer and a loaded gun to boot.
