Top Customer Reviews

By Sid Nuncius TOP 500 REVIEWER on November 19, 2013
This is a very lovely disc of 15th Century English polyphony by Walter Frye. Frye is an elusive figure whose identity is uncertain, but whose music was widely known and performed in his time and which has been preserved in a Burgundian manuscript. The programme here comprises two of his mass settings (one perhaps uncertainly attributed), an Agnus Dei and some instrumental pieces interspersed with the mass movements. It works extremely well: the music is quite spare but very beautiful, the instrumental pieces give the whole programme a real lift and I find the whole disc a real pleasure.

The Ferrara Ensemble are excellent. They are a fine group of singers with excellent intonation and a lovely blend. They produce a beautiful, full sound which makes this music really glow. The only other recording of Frye I know is by The Hilliard Ensemble Walter Frye: Vocal Works who are also brilliant in their way but who seem to me make Frye's music a little distant and forbidding. This disc is quite the opposite: the warm sound welcomes the listener in and it is easy to become immersed in the truly lovely polyphony and excellent instrumental playing.

The recorded sound is excellent and the notes are pretty good, with full texts. This is a rather obscure disc, but if anyone does stumble across this review I would wholeheartedly recommend this: it's a real gem.
