Norton AntiVirus 2007 blocks viruses and spyware with advanced protection. It helps protect your entire computer by stopping viruses, worms, and spyware. Norton AntiVirus works in the background so you can surf the Internet, read the news, play games, and download software or music without disruption. It also scans and cleans all email and instant messenger attachments, preventing you from receiving threats, or spreading them to others. With set-it and forget-it functionality, Norton AntiVirus checks for updates continuously and automatically blocks new and emerging threats from getting on your system. In addition to protection updates, Norton AntiVirus provides new product features as available throughout your subscription period.

Norton AntiVirus 2007 blocks viruses and spyware with advanced protection. It automatically detects and removes viruses, spyware, unwanted adware, and Internet worms, and provides protection updates. Your purchase provides a full year of protection with regular updates from Norton to combat the latest Internet threats. The purchase of this product contains a licence for one user.

The 2007 version includes the new Security History feature to let you review detections and other actions taken by Norton AntiVirus. Also new for this release is Cookie Tracking Support, which gives you the ability to remove detected tracking cookies.
The improved user interface in AntiVirus 2007 contains a convenient, centralized location where you can review detections, items repaired, and action required. View larger.

The new Security History is a convenient, centralized location where you can review detections and other actions taken by Norton AntiVirus. AntiVirus 2007 continues to offer Auto-Protect, Worm Blocking and more alerts. It also provides the option to allow Norton AntiVirus to automatically take action or be alerted prior to taking action. This "set-it-and-forget-it" solution lets you view alerts when you want to, so you can let Norton AntiVirus take care of the rest. At your convenience you can visit the Security History to view detections made and actions already taken by Norton AntiVirus.

Tracking Cookie Support is also new for AntiVirus 2007. Upon scanning the system, tracking cookies will be detected and you will have the option to delete tracking cookies or ignore them. For some sites, you may want to allow cookies so that you don't need to sign into the site each time you visit it. But other cookies you may want to delete, such as those from third-party advertisers.

Internet Worm Protection has been enhanced for 2007 so that it now protects against entire categories of spyware, viruses, worms and Trojan horse programs. Rather than block individually identified threats, this feature now matches individual but unknown threats to known worm and virus families and blocks them from installing on the system without requiring specific virus or worm signatures, giving you zero-hour protection. This technology helps protects against new spyware, viruses and worm threats before they are even created.

Rootkit protection has been improved for AntiVirus 2007 to better guard against hidden threats such as rootkits, a type of virus that exhibits no discernible symptoms in order to evade detection. Previous versions of Norton AntiVirus already protect against user mode and application level rootkits. Leveraging VxMS technology acquired by Symantec through its merger with Veritas, Symantec has increased detection of emerging stealth threats by including patent-pending rootkit protection at the deepest level within the operating system. This protects against kernel mode rootkits that have dropped a driver onto the system. These threats may be invisible to Windows or other security software, but can be detected and removed by AntiVirus 2007.

Norton AntiVirus protects your computer with three distinct types of scans.

  • The Preinstall Scan detects and cleans spyware, viruses and worms on an already infected system. The enhanced pre-install scan now detects and removes high-risk spyware before AntiVirus is even installed.
  • QuickScan runs invisibly after you receive new virus definitions from Norton. QuickScan helps ensure that your computer is fully protected against even the newest threats. QuickScan has now expanded to search for other areas on the system such as "My Documents" and other areas of common infection.
  • Full Scan is a full-system scan that now includes a foreground and background throttling mode. The background throttling mode performs the scan using less processing power so users can continue working on their system without major performance impacts.

The Norton Protection Center has been completely redesigned to communicate security status simply and efficiently. You can browse easily through each drop-down category to view the status of the category’s security features. Overall computer status is always visible via the Norton Status icon on the taskbar or in the Windows system tray icon.

The improved Auto Protect Blocking detects and blocks incoming viruses, spyware and unwanted adware threats as they attempt to install and execute on your system. Auto Protect Blocking now blocks both threats and high security risks from ever installing on the system. It is always running invisibly in the background to protect your computers. The easy "install and forget" feature keeps you from having to make constant security decisions to keep your computer safe and protected.

Packer support has also been updated for 2007 to protect against virus hidden in compressed files or other masking technology. Many virus writers use packer tools to package up a virus such that the virus becomes difficult to detect. Sympack will now focus on unpacking the virus so that it can be detected.

It was with a sense of abject dread (because of all the negative reviews) that I purchased this software a week or two ago from Amazon.
I was depressed knowing I was spending my precious cash on what would so obviously prove to be an *inferior* product.

***
My 2006 subscription was about to run out (which it did yesterday). The time had come to update to next year's version.

Not being able to put it off any longer, I removed all traces of NAV 2006 from my system and rebooted.

After rebooting, I inserted the NAV 2007 disk into my CD drive. I was prompted to install the software. No sooner did I begin the process when I ran into a snag. It indicated that I must remove ZoneAlarm. This filled me with despair because I remembered how everyone was reporting how it is incompatible with their ZoneAlarm firewall software.

So, this means I won't be able to use a firewall with it? That ain't no way to live. I'll be vulnerable on the internet without a firewall!

Well, having no other choice, I did as it said. I removed all ZoneAlarm components and rebooted the system.

***
I began the process of installing NAV 2007 again. Lo and behold! The process began and ended without a hitch!

***
But what about my ZoneAlarm?
I decided to verify for myself whether or not ZA and NAV could coexist on my poor pitiably slow nearly 5 year old Dell Dimension desktop.

I went to the ZoneAlarm website and downloaded their latest *free version* and installed it (I entered my license key later, as I own the Pro version). There quite simply was no problem encountered.

***
I now have NAV 2007 and my ZoneAlarm Pro softwares getting along with each other swimmingly (for the moment anyway).

***
It seems to me that there is no inherent conflict between the two.

My guess is that many people simply are not realizing that they *must* first remove ZA/ZAP and all its components completely from their systems (make sure you reboot after removing) and *then* begin the process of installing NAV fresh.

***
The installation of the 2007 version actually seemed a quicker and smoother process than the 2006 version had been the year before. (I remember having had some inital troubles with it.)

***
I hope I have been able to allay some of the abject fear and dread of this product for people whose NAV subscriptions are about to run out.

***
I cannot guarantee that *you* won't have any installation problems simply because everybody's pc system may have its own particular incompatibility issues with any given software.

***
I have to give this product a glowing five stars based on my experience with it (so far anyway).

If I happen to encounter any problems later regarding the product, I will update this review.

***
If anyone (other than me) is able to verify that ZA and NAV can be used together without problems, please post your experiences in reviews here so that people are helped.

I hope I have been helpful to you.

Friday September 21, 2007: Just thought that I would check in with an updated report on the software's perfomance... What has it been now... 9 months or so?... Well, it is still the case that after all this time there still hasn't been so much as a single negative incident with the NAV's operation or performance on my machine. (My "very old" machine now.) I am sorry that the vast majority you have not been so lucky.

I have been using this product for 10 years. Over that time I've had a number of viruses try to sneak onto my machine via email, web surfing, whatever. And this product has caught every one. Since I've been on the Internet, I can honestly say that I have never had one single bit of nasty stuff on my computer, thanks to this product. I buy it every year. It has always installed without any problem, updates itself every few days, and I never have to give it any thought.

But the rebate program should be investigated by the Attorney General! Every year, I buy it with a rebate that makes it nearly free. For example, this year Amazon was charging $36.99 with free shipping & a $30 rebate. What a country! I read all the fine print, filled out the forms, and checked everything closer than my 1040. I mailed it and two weeks later, received an email that I hadn't included the UPC code. I emailed them asking where I could send the photocopy of my original entry I had kept showing the UPC attached. They then set the status to "approved" and I expect my rebate shortly. THE EXACT SAME THING HAPPENED LAST YEAR! Apparently they just deny every entry, and then approve them when the person claims to have documentation.

My advice: Read carefully. Sometimes they want the box top, sometimes the cover page from the manual, sometimes the little "proof of purchase tabs" (not to be confused with the UPC code). It's always a little cut-and-paste craft project.

Save everything including the entire box, manual, CD, invoice, because next year it may be an upgrade rebate, and they seem to ask for different things every year. Photocopy everything before you mail it. And when they deny you, write back and tell them you can prove it.

The product is definitely 5-stars but the managers of the rebate program should be reading this from prison.
