Norton Security is the latest incarnation or replacement for Norton 360. Norton has revamped their retail security lineup with the home line simplified to pretty much Norton Security with or without backup.

This application comes with licensing for 5 devices: Windows, Mac, IOS (iPhone/iPad) and Android. This should be enough for many families but probably not all. If you need more or want online backup you might consider Norton Security with Backup.

You do not get the same features on all devices. I have Windows and IOS so I'll share my experience with these.

Windows Setup:

Windows Installation was faster than with older versions of Norton and was pretty painless for me. I did have to restart my Windows 7 Pro desktop. The controls available are pretty basic and there are lots of on/off controls to customize how Norton works. What is missing in this incarnation of Norton Security is the ability to white-list specific directories or files. This caused some consternation for me, but more on that near the end.

In operation on Windows I feel Norton Security is less "noisy" than previous versions; I don't feel like I'm constantly being marketed to death. Unlike previous versions of the retail product I didn't perceive my PC running noticeably slower with it in operation. This is a very good thing! The initial full scan turned up a couple of minor items missed by my previous antivirus, but none of these were active viruses. Instead they were inactive left over pieces of already removed viruses.

Application Compatibility Problems:

I use VirtualBox to run a virtual machine on this PC.

I've been using Norton for many years, and just "upgraded" NIS 2014 to this version. One of my need to haves is to manually allow or deny internet access to programs. In this latest version, I can still disable Automatic Program Control. However, a new "feature" they added is that if I don't choose to allow or deny in 60 seconds or less, they will automatically choose the default option for me. So if I'm away from my computer and miss the notification, I won't even know that a program tried to access the internet. This, of course, renders manual program control useless.

Norton says they will take my feedback into consideration regarding this new feature, but I'm not holding my breath.

If you don't mind having Norton decide what can and cannot access the internet, then this review is not meant for you. For those that prefer complete control over their firewall, you have been warned.

Sorry for the trouble! We definitely understand you wanting to have full control over all program access to the Internet. The reason we made this change was because in some cases, an alert asking to "allow" or "block" would get hidden under other windows and would by default block the Internet to that program until the alert was answered. This would cause some people who didn't see the alert to have issues when they would otherwise want the program to access the Internet.

We will definitely see what we can do to betting improve this so that you can have the complete control you need. Thank you again for your feedback. :)

For all of those tripping over the "I have a code, what do I do now?".... I struggled too. It would be nice if Amazon put the following in their purchase instructions...

Go the web address: [...] -- Enter your product code. Skip or sign up for auto renewal. Install... Send e-mails to other devices you wish to install.... done!

Symantec's site is worse than Amazon's for figuring this out! -- Yet, with the correct URL, it's easy!
Product runs fine, by the way... Full System Scan found 5 security risks which were not removed by the 2014 version....

This was a switch from Norton Internet Security to Norton Security and my first instance of purchasing software by download from Amazon.

Once installed the product seems to work just fine and seems to be better than NIS.

However, the download process was not quite as straightforward as it might have been and someone else might benefit from my experience. Bottom line--Enter the product key first on the norton.com/setup page (link for this is on the bottom of the page). Don't download first and then plan on activating with the key code (at least from my experience--see below)!!

I got an email from Amazon confirming the purchase with an "Access Your Content" button. Software downloading and installation instructions were not in the email. When I clicked the "Access Your Content" button I went to my Amazon account's software and games library. Under the Norton Security product was a small link "how to redeem your item." Clicking on this link brought up a new popup window with instructions to go to the norton.com/setup link, enter the product key code (sent in the email and also on the account software and games library) and proceed.

I went to tne norton.com/setup link which was a Norton account page. I had an account and signed in. Here's where the problem was encountered. The account prominently displayed a "Norton Internet Security" "agree and download" button which I clicked which installed "NISdownloader" and then started downloading a 320 Mb file.

Download and install was very confusing. No way to successfully download from Amazon and believe me, I tried. I finally went to Norton site, downloaded trial and applied key. All the rest was easy. Installation and configuration was a walk in the park. This is definitely lighter than I expected and so far working flawlessly and quite transparently on my trusty old Dell xps410. So far so good...
Oct 18, 2014 update: Very light and seems very effective. Net browsing speed faster and email is now much faster send/receive than when I had KIS 2015 installed. I'm not comfortable with deletes of temp files with no audit trail of what what deleted. No detailed reports of blocked traffic and attempts to compromise my system. Browser add in's are not intrusive. Overall still think this is a good product.
