Trygge Gran was a norwegian on Scotts tragic Antarctic Expediton, wher he competed against Amundsen. Its great to read diaries of other participants of this expedition once you read the official expedititon report

Anyone interested in Scott's Terra Nova expedition should read Gran's diary. It is the tale of a man torn between patriotism and friendship. Even more valuable is Gran's view of the expedition, especially his opinion about a 5 man party going to the Pole when everything was prepared for a 4 men team...

But, what I found most enlighting was the fact that Gran was a valuable and esteem member of the Terra Nova Antarctic Expedition. If you only read Scott's diary, you'll be misled by the Owner opinion, describing the Norwegian as a somewhat lazy and useless companion. You have to know that Gran was a foreigner, and, like Amundsen, a Norwegian at that. But, Gran's diary present parts of his fellow teamates records, such as Griffith Taylor's or Teddy Evans, who praises the Norwegian ski expert as brave, humourus, strong and resourceful.

To tell the truth, I was expecting to read more of the same about the Terra Nova expedition. However, Gran's views, not available anywhere else, give a clearer picture of what happended to the Scott's Expedition. Especially noteworthy and delightfull are the lenghty notes and stories about such participants as Frank Debenham, Griffith Taylor, Silas Wright, Bernard Day, "Mary" Nelson or Robert Forde. Those were not as important as Scott, Wilson or Oates in the eyes of history, but they nevertheless deserve to be know.
