One thing that bothered me about using this cooker was that you had to preheat it and then put the bottom pie crust in -- this is tricky because pressing the pie dough down can make for wrinkled pie crusts if you're not very careful when pressing down. I put the circle of pie dough (which was easy to cut out with the cutter that's provided with the maker) on the top of the well for a second and then lightly push the dough down to prevent too much wrinkling.
Although that bothered me, I still was able to make crowd-pleasing pumpkin pies (without tops, obviously). I did take some scraps and made letters, hearts, and random things that my sister tried to analyze that I put on the tops to make them individualized. One can of pre-made pumpkin pie filling (with the added 2 eggs and egg nog substituted for evaporated milk) makes about 20 pie fillings, depending on how much you put in there. They seemed to do the best with cooking 10 minutes or slightly more, not the 5-8 minutes the pie maker believes will cook all pies. Still, that's not very long for delicious baby pies.
I'm hoping to bring these baby pies to events and possibly cutting them up into slices. Overall, I'm pleased with the pie maker from Nostaglia Electrics and am looking forward to making berry pies with tops next.
UPDATE: I did try to make cherry pies with tops but found out that you have to fill them almost to the point of overfilling to get the top to cook correctly. I used store-bought pie filling, and while it tasted good, only the last two that I really filled were cooked correctly. I'm not sure I want to make those again.
However, I did make pumpkin pies again for an event recently and did cut them into quarters. The crusts broke a lot while doing so, but they were definitely awesome and tasted wonderful, of course. Perhaps using a better knife instead of a plastic one would've made them come out better. I still recommend this pie maker!
Any problems I have had with the machine have been my own doing. I am not a good baker, so I wasn't sure how long to let pecan pies cook. I left them in there longer than the recipe said and they basically oozed and solidified all over the inside of the machine. You can't immerse the unit in water, there are up-and-down grooves all around each cavity, and the lids don't detach from one another. You can't take any kind of steel wool to it or else you'll scratch the non-stick surface, and using a scrub brush is rather awkward. If you have a pie that leaks, that part will adhere to the machine, making your pie crack and break when you try to get it out. Aside from that, it cooks great. Every time I have used it the pies have crispy crusts and cooked insides and most of the time the pies slide right out. I used the "pastry pie crust" recipe from the enclosed booklet and found that dough hard to work with.
So, if you use your own recipe for crust (or a store-bought one), don't overfill the pie filling, and don't let the pies overcook, you'll have good results.
1: the dough cutter is too small to cut a circle that fits the depressions. Making a normal pie requires dough that overlaps the rim of the pie rim. This cutter cuts a circle that barely reaches the top edge let alone go over the crimping edge.
2: the actual pies are less than 3" in diameter, not including the crimped crust. A bit of a joke and those dimensions are not listed in the product description.
I suppose the only good thing was the cost but what is that against a poor product? I really wonder where those glowing opinions originated!
I gave it one star for cost.
Since writing this review, I've learned I cannot return it because I tried it out!! I will not buy a product like this from Amazon again.
