The design is very cute, very retro, and very practical. The top is a hinged lid in which you can store and warm buns as the hot dogs cook. The idea is simple. You place some buns in the box and heat from the cooking hot dogs rises up through some slats in the floor of that box to warm the buns. I did not use this feature so I don't know how well it works.
As for the roller apparatus itself, this was what I cared about, so this is what I will critically review. As pictured in the listing and in my attached pictures, you can fit 8 hot dogs on the roller at one time as long as you do not buy "bun size". The longer dogs cannot be cooked side by side because the unit is not wide enough. I knew this, so I purchased the right size dogs to accommodate 30 guests. Additionally, because I knew I would have so many people, I cooked a bunch of these dogs in my crock pot so they were cooked and heated through, and I finished them on the roller as needed.
Why have the roller at all if I had already cooked them? Two reasons: for one, there's nothing like the crispy skin of a gas station hot dog fresh from a roller. It has better bite for my palate, and it makes them such an inviting color. Two, it lent quite the ambiance to the party and people just fawned all over it. This roller worked EXACTLY like the commercial ones in gas stations across the country. My dogs were a light brown with snap, even my low fat Weight Watchers friendly dogs. They all tasted better on the roller.
Pay attention to how long they're on there though. Just like a gas station roller, the longer the dog is on there, the more shriveled, wrinkly, and unappetizing it gets. I left a few on there for two hours even on the low setting, and when I noticed, they were practically brown husks. My doggy didn't mind though. ;)
Also, your hot dogs will drip, which is why there is a drip tray provided. I had grease on the rollers, the heating coils, the drip tray, and a few stray spatters down the back of the unit.
By the way, assembly is as easy as sticking in the plastic poles, attaching the hinged top to them, and snapping in the roller and drip tray. Easy! Took all of five minutes, if that.
Great unit worth the price. I would buy again and recommend to others.
NOTE- I will try to upload a photo of the unit in action with the light installed.
The company sent out the maker very quickly and it was well packed. Easy to assemble. Make sure you are careful when you attach the roller grill the first time, it's a little hard to get in. Once it's gone in once no problem.
On our first attempt we allowed the grill to heat up for five minutes rather than three. Always use the highest setting when cooking them. The hot dogs at first barely turned. After a couple minutes they started slowly turning. Within 10 minutes we started smelling them cooking. If you need a quick hot dog don't depend on this to do that for you. We've found that putting the hot dogs on for at least 20 minutes makes a real old fashioned carnival style hot dog. And make sure to heat the rollers for five minutes first.
The hot dog bun warmer is ok, but it's basically just a box with holes in the bottom to allow in the heat from the rollers below. Wrap your buns in paper towels and add them to the warmer 10 minutes before eating. Any more time and they start getting too dry.
Highly recommended. If you have grand kids, they'll be excited! Party time!
