We've had this for a week now and am generally quite pleased with the results. The only thing that keeps it from a 5 star review is that we've had problems with the plug that goes into the kettle cooker. It fits real loose, so it doesn't always make a connection. Once I realized that, I just had to "wiggle" the plug a bit to get it to connect, and we've been popping ever since then.
Things you should get to really experience theater (or "theatre" for you brits) grade popcorn:
o Coconut oil - can be found at Trader Joe's, or order online
o Flavacol - this is the secret, it's an additive to the coconut oil
o Kernel Seasons - a powdery flavoring you will love, comes in many flavors
If you aren't going to use flavacol, then get some good popcorn salt. But flavacol has 0 calories, 0 fat, and 0 cholesterol, so there's no real reason. Coconut oil is the best oil to use to pop your corn, and this isn't really optional. It is also the healthiest.
As for Kernel Seasons, there's like 14 flavors you can use, and my favorite is White Cheddar. These can be found at most grocery stores in the popcorn section. There is a catch... if you don't use flavacol, the popcorn will be too dry and so the powder won't stick to the kernels and will end up at the bottom of the bowl. If you don't do the flavacol, there is a "spritzer" that you can use, but why?
Finally, this kettle is designed for 2 oz of popping corn at a time... if you put more than 2oz, when the corn starts to pop it will blow a lot of the unpopped kernels out of the kettle, so DONT DO THAT! Don't be "that guy" who puts 3oz of kernels into a 2oz kettle and then complains online about all the unpopped kernels.
The cup they give you is 2 ounces when it is flat (not heaping) on top... if you don't like unpopped kernels, just go with a little less, and there will be far fewer.
And if you are just going with popcorn salt instead of flavacol, then here's a nice trick for getting the salt into the kettle without burning yourself... you have the 2oz cup they give you for measuring the amount of kernels... before you put kernels into the cup, pour your salt into the bottom of the 2oz cup, to your liking, then put the kernels in. The salt will displace a few kernels, thus reducing the unpopped kernels, and when you pour your kernels into the kettle, you are dumping your salt as well. Much less opportunity to get a burn, because this thing does get hot!
Pop and enjoy!
Oh, and 2 ounces of popcorn is pretty much a hearty serving for 1 person, so if you are having 4 people over for a movie, you will probably need 3 poppings... just to keep things in perspective....
Now onto the CONS:
It doesn't make much at a time so I do wish I'd bought the larger version of this. The bucket is hard to get clean and if kernels get stuck in it you will smell burnt popcorn ALL the time until you fish them out. If you want a large amount of popcorn you have to let the bucket cool then reheat it between "batches" which is a pain if you want to feed a crowd - plan to make it a bit ahead so you have time to make enough.
We have other items from this brand and love them, so it's not the brand, it's this particular model of popcorn machine.
