In the end, the popcorn popped perfectly and was delicious with a splash of popcorn butter and pinch of popcorn salt. We did this by using the popper's cap and measured it as directed (about 3 1/2 tablespoons), heating the popper up for around 5 minutes before turning it off, adding the kernels, turning it on, and letting the popcorn make its' way into my catch bowl. I submitted a picture to the product images.
The most common reviewer complaints are noise, burning smell/burnt kernels, popcorn/kernels "flying out everywhere", hardly any popcorn, stale tasting popcorn. Let me address each of these.
Noise: It is an air popper and has a plastic housing. Yes, it is a little louder than most appliances, but again it is an air popper. Several of the reviews make it out as if a fighter jet is about to kick on it's afterburners. It is not that loud.
Burning Smell/Burnt Kernels: Yes, upon initial use, there was a burning smell. Even my husband was a bit concerned that it was about to catch on fire. I rode it out and shortly the smell dissipated and the kernels started popping. Overall, I had maybe three burnt kernels, and they weren't even grossly burnt like you get from microwave popcorn. It wasn't anymore than you would get from a microwave bag or movie theater popcorn. A lot less really. Granted, the post popped popcorn didn't smell the best, but it didn't last either.
Runaway popcorn/kernels: I had exactly two...just two kernels try to make their escape at the beginning of the popping. They landed in my bowl, I picked them up, and put them back in the popper to watch as they expanded and became delicious fluffy popcorn. I had one... only one popped kernel try to flee. My dog caught it and he summarily executed it.
Lack of popped corn: I used a measured mixing bowl as a catch bowl and my kernels yielded eight cups of popcorn. This is perfect for my son and me since my husband is not much of a popcorn person. There were only about seven or eight un-popped kernels overall.
Stale tasting popcorn: I used a fresh jar of Orville Redenbacher kernels. The thing about microwave popcorn is that is processed to be slightly crispy. Movie theater popcorn is usually saturated in some butter or oil then customers add more butter to it and salt. Plain air popped popcorn is a bit chewier (hence the thought of it being stale) than the two familiar type popcorn. It is also healthier, but if you want some flavor use it sparingly and in moderation.
After several uses, this air popper is still making delicious popcorn. The burning smell from the initial bowl hasn't reoccurred, just the wonderful smell of fresh popcorn. I haven't had any further burned pieces, and the amount of escaping kernels has been very limited.
It has been almost a year since getting this popcorn maker. It still works extremely well throughout several uses a week. All you have to do is follow the directions. I have noticed that the longer you let the machine heat up, the less un-popped kernels there are. Just today, I let it heat for around 8 minutes and only got one un-popped kernel.
Three years in, and still going strong. We use this popper frequently, and haven't had any issues yet. In the comments below, someone asked why I let it heat for around 8 minutes. Well, once I turn it on, I usually walk away to take care of something else, instead of staring at it the entire time. Generally, I do let it heat between 5-10 minutes depending on what task needs to be done. Whether it is finishing up dishes, taking the dogs out, or whatever. The time also allows me to give the notice to the family if we're going to watch a movie or play a game. They can use the time finish up whatever they are working on and get settled in the living room. We are not an instant gratification not a type of family. Even stove top poppers take time to heat. If you don't want to wait, you're better off buying microwaveable popcorn. You don't always have to be in such a rush. Slow down sometimes and enjoy some fresh popped popcorn.
My product arrived in a timely fashion and I was super excited to try it. Very easy to clean and super easy to operate but the quality of the popcorn is very upsetting. The assembly of the product is also very clumsy, I wish the componets had more structure towards the contruction. The machine can easily be bumped and it falls apart easily.
