Easton Allard is a world traveler and a writer, who doesn't like goodbyes, and putting down roots isn't something he plans to do anytime soon. He's left more than one woman brokenhearted and the last one caught him right before he left and basically put a curse on him by telling him "I hope one day you give your heart to someone. And when it happens I hope she breaks your heart." Right then I knew he was going to meet someone and finally fall in love.
Pearl, the matchmaker, also comes to stay at the B & B, and people either leave early or a cancellation happens so Pearl ends up spending most of the summer there. Funny how that just happens (wink, wink). She and Lani's grandmother hit it off and spend a lot of time together playing Mahjong and talking. They're both there to offer words of wisdom to Lani and Easton when needed, but aren't ever pushy.
I loved this story. I've never been to Hawaii but I could picture it from the beautiful descriptions in the book. I loved the relationship between Lani and her grandmother, and how Pearl was in the story but not the main focus of it. I liked Easton--he was a good guy and I liked his relationship with his family and the couple of times Lani listened in on his conversations. I liked how Lani and Easton both changed--not a lot, but in a way that was important for them to grow as people.
I've only read a couple of Rachael Anderson's books but I've loved all of them and I'm looking forward to reading more by her.
The Power of the Matchmaker series has been fun so far. I've read 2 books and working on the 3rd and 4th. I’ve been pleasantly surprised at the wonderful way each author has incorporated the Matchmaker, Pearl in each story. It is interesting how they keep Pearl’s identity and personality consistent in each book, but each book is completely different and stand alone.
Not Always Happenstance, by Rachael Anderson is about Lani and Easton. Pearl has orchestrated their meeting and sticks around to make sure they get together. This book has the usual ingredients to making a fun love story, but Rachael makes it unique and interesting to read. The characters are real and fun to get to know. I think one of my favorite characters is Puna, Lani’s grandmother. She’s just such a grandmother. Lani is so loyal and wants a close family so badly and Easton has the close family and really wants to keep is wandering lifestyle, but Lani definitely changes that attitude. She won’t put up with his flirting and non-serious attitude about dating her. That sets the scene for some misunderstandings, outright fun and some sweet kisses. I liked how Lani and Easton had to grow and learn how to be in a real relationship and that it means give and take and compromise on both sides. Rachael is a great writer who put depth and fun into what she writes. Can’t wait to read some more of her books.
PS. I also have a hankering for some good banana bread now, so be warned.
