Why do girls who find themselves at the center of a love triangle act so stupid? Seriously, I've read so many novels lately where a girl somehow finds herself torn between two guys, stringing along either one or both of them as she attempts to make up her mind. It's particularly frustrating to read about these heroines, wishing I could slap some sense into them before the problem explodes in their face, which it always does. When I read the blurb for Not at First by Phalla S. Rios, which noted the heroine's position between two love interests, I knew there would be major romantic drama in store for protagonist Angel Mabbott. Despite wanting to scream obscenities at Angel on several occasions, I enjoyed the story, becoming thoroughly absorbed by its elements of mystery and romance.
If Not at First taught me anything, it's that first impressions can be very misleading. From the time Roman Conti and Kevin Hawken are first introduced to the final pages, my initial opinions of both men are drastically changed. The secrets shrouding Angel's past are soon joined by additional veiled truths concerning the two men that suddenly appear in her life. Angel's relationships with Roman and Kevin are simultaneously maddening and captivating - maddening because both men are incredibly vague about everything except their desire for Angel, and captivating because I needed to know which man Angel would ultimately choose.
Not at First is a book that grew on me; the more I read, the more I enjoyed the story. The plot is fast-paced, gaining traction towards the final chapters leading up to the cliffhanger ending. The book is far from lacking in drama and suspense, although I would've liked to see more character development.

This could have been *just another story* with *just another romance*, and *just another cliffhanger*, but it wasn't. This book had that little something different that makes it a must read debut novel. Not at First is the kind of story that builds as you read, and once you reach the final chapters you are blown away. One twist in particular made my jaw drop. This author KNOWS how to write a good story and is one to watch-well done!

(FYI-yes, there are editing issues, but I understand that the author has gone back to revise this edition and a new version will be released very soon. This review is based on the first published version, and editing was not taken into consideration).

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest opinion.

I absolutely loved this book and couldn't put it down. I was so engrossed in this story that I had it finished in just a couple hours.

Angel has just moved to Minneapolis from California to start college. She wants to start a new life and forget all about her old life and the pain that she's trying to leave behind. She moves in with 3 girls one of which is Lola who becomes her best friend. I liked Lola she worries about Angle and wants her to enjoy herself and be happy.

Kevin is sexy, tattooed, mysterious, and extremely nice. When he comes to pick Angel up one morning he opens her fridge seeing no food in it he later comes by and goes out and buys all kinds of groceries to drop back off. He truly cares for Angel and he wants what's best for her and for to be happy and he knows that it's him that can give her that.

Roman is the other man in Angel's life and I hate him. He comes off to friendly and smooth when you first actually meet him. He makes my skin crawl and you know he is no good. It doesn't take long for him to turn into a controlling jerk.

Phalla wrote a book that kept me on the edge of my seat. The ending of the book has me anxious to read the next book. I need to know what happens with Kevin and Angel. I will admit to being curious to see what will happen to the all mighty jerk Roman. A definite must read that you will find yourself reading time and again.

So I looked at some of the reviews prior to writing my own. Was a bit curious to see what everyone else thought of this debut novel. First off let me say I just finished emailing Phalla to congratulate her on this novel. Now I was surprised to hear this was her debut album which made me even more giddier to review. I disagree mostly with the not so happy reviewers but in one aspect I must agree. We didnt really have her story down on the page as much as we get to find out about Kevins. Knowing that one of the mens story is entwined with Angels past was unexpected but the real shock was being surprised as to which protagonist it ended up being a part of her tumultuous past. I loved the steamy, raunchy, overly testosterone filled characters. It showed through out the entire story how Angel wanted to break pass the mold she had previously created for herself during the time she was in a truly dark place. I loved moments like those because they hit close to home, I could identify with that aspect of her indecision and the fear of choosing wrong when you let your mind wander in the matters of your heart. Kevin to me was the prince in shining tattoos, tattoos so symbolic as well as sexy. What captivated me about him was that he wasnt afraid to be real with Angel at all times no matter how crude it would come across because even though he was hiding secrets from her she still deep down knew that their connection motivated the relationship they had. Roman seems like the italian sex God coming to sweep Angel off her feet in which he does pretty much from the moment they meet. Although his overly confident and demanding self doesnt sit well with me in which he commands Angel and expects her to sit hand at foot to whatever he says.Read more ›
